'06 Boxster S Head gasket question

Seller says they did a "block test" and determined the car has a blown headgasket.
Worst case scenario, what should I prepare for in terms of repairing / replacing.
Just the headgasket(s)? , a complete top end including pistons/cylinders, or is a case split in my near future?
Or is it best to get a wrecking yard motor?
I've never done one of these before.
Thank you for any help or suggestions.

If this car actually has a blown head gasket, it would be the very first one. The head gaskets in these engines are multi-layer steel, and actually stronger than the cylinder head and block castings, and never fail. More likely, it is a cracked head, which may be repairable.

Thanks JFP.
I appreciate you responding.
Is it advisable to do the rings, etc. (if available) all the way around?
Cuz ya can't tell how hot it got?

Totally depends upon what the inside of the engine looks like.

JFP:
Please be specific...can one see from the outside (pull dipstick or drop sump) or does one need to boroscope the inside to determine the amount of destruction?

I'm asking because the car is not in front of me and I'd need to beg a friend to go check it out.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.
Peter
And then there's the Age Old Question regarding the IMS. I did the one in my 3 chain '01 S, these I understand are different and the case needs to be split? Also heard that the bearing is redesigned and doesn't break anymore?

The 06 car will carry the non-serviceable oversized IMS bearing, and yes, they still fail.

I would first use a pressure tester to determine that the cooling jacket is leaking, and would then leak down the cylinders to try and isolate which hole(s) it is in. Once that is confirmed, at least one head will probably have to come off.

O.k., I think I'm getting clearer. It'll most likely be contained to the top end? I hope.
Are the cylinders or the pistons / liners replaceable in these engines?
Please forgive the many questions and Thanks for helping!
Peter

Lower end engine case cracking is rare on the later cars, it is most likely in one or both cylinder heads, where cracking is more common.

Yes, the pistons and liners are replaceable, but pricey; a full set of new liners requires sending the empty engine case to a specialist shop, and costs in the $5-6K range for the liners and may take a couple of months to get the cases back due to backlog. Realistically, budget in the $12-15K range to replace everything, and you are going to need about $5-8K is special tooling to do the rebuild.

The cost of doing this is exactly why so many people just buy a used engine instead.
