987.1 Manual Conversion

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a cayman 987.1, however the majority of the car that were sold in Malaysia were tiptronic models. I've never seen a manaul 987.1 or 987.2 for sale in Malaysia.

There is a 987.1 for sale which is relatively reasonable(U$25000), and yes, cars here are expensive due to the 300% import duties and taxes.

I would get the car on the condition that I will be able to do a manual conversion. Is it possible? Manual gearboxes are relatively affordable(on ebay).

Kind Regards,
Ash

You would be far better off, and probably would spend less money buying a manual and importing it. You literally would have to take the entire car apart to convert it, and then it would always be a "Frankenstein" vehicle. Either live with the Tip or bring in one that is already a manual. Even in our domestic market, such a conversion project is looked at as a colossal waste of time and money.

Hello, I have heard for years that these conversions should not or can not be done. This is simply not true. Yes, they are involved, and touch upon many of the cars systems, but they are possible. You will need the skill to do it, and lots of parts. Financially, it is usually not worth it. In your case, being you don't already own the car, I say try to simply find or import a manual. If you already owned the car, my response would be different. The transmission is only 1 of many parts you would need. There is a flywheel, clutch, PP TOB, pedal assembly, cables, shift assy, DME and tons of smaller parts. So can it be done? Yes. Should it be done? Probably not. I have done many conversions, and they were all fairly involved. I don't want to come across as negative, however, I would hate to see you get in over your head.
Proceed with caution

Good luck

Rich

Of course they can be done, but like JF says, it is a massive waste of money and effort compared to finding a car that suits your needs.

We have converted a couple of 964 from Tiptronic to Manual and the price was not for the feint of wallet....

Cheers
