Is there any preferred brand of oil to use? Total? Motul? Liqui Moly? Mobil 1? Not to start an oil information war but just practical reasonings I can look at for my own information. Thanks.

The Shell Rotella Gas Truck product is recommended for use in gasoline pickup trucks and SUVs that face even the most extreme conditions including heavy hauling, towing, extreme temperatures and off-road because of its unsurpassed protection. We know that gas truck owners want a motor oil that delivers on key benefits including protection for extremes their engines face. Shell Rotella Gas Truck is all about hard work, and we know that many gasoline-powered pickup and SUV drivers, particularly those with 4×4 vehicles, use their trucks for hard-working purposes. The product is also suitable for gasoline pickup trucks or SUVs that do not face these types of conditions as well. The SAE 5W-20 and SAE 5W-30 viscosity grades are recommended for use in all vehicles under all driving conditions. And the SAE 0W-20 is recommended for all vehicles that allow the use of an SAE 0W-20.

What you should be looking at is shear strength, and the level of ZDDP in the oil; most of the product's mention have little to no ZDDP in them, or are not known for their shear strength.

First, I like your first comment This is an old BIG topic and popcorn helps! Here are my 2 cents ...

After 1994 the industry had made changes to operate without the higher ZDDP content. Opel was one of the manufacturers that stretched it out to 1996.

The Porsche factory/engineers recommend Mobil 1 as do most of the European manufacturers.

So, going with Mobil 1 or anything that specs out to be equal or better is a good way to go! I as well as many of my serious car guy friends use Mobil 1 in some of our cars and also use Liqui Moly oil and their oil additives and believe it is better than Mobil 1.

Porsches are worth using quality oils

Not all oil removed all the ZDDP; Mobil 1 removed most of it, as did many others. And just because the OEM "recommends" the oil does not mean it is the best for the vehicle, it often means that it is better for the OEM.

You need to do your research, find oils that have high ZDDP levels, which contrary to published BS, do not harm catalytic converters on properly maintained engines.

I have a list of all oils that all have a higher content of ZZDP. I manufacturer and sell parts for classic cars worldwide that actually require ZDDP additive or oils from the list I have.

My research was done decades ago and I'm still on top of that subject.

How about you???
