981 S performance exhaust
Can anyone give me their opinion on the best performance exhaust available for the 981 S. I have switched to the Boxster after 50 years of 911 ownership. So I am not familiar with performance upgrades for the 981 cars. I would prefer something aggressive yet civil, if that's possible. Can any of you 981 owners refer me to any good Boxster discussion sites
Many thanks |

The one it came with. Most aftermarket systems cost a fortune, either don't improve power output or even lose some, and many make horrific droning noises; regardless of what their advertisement's claim...

I tend to agree with JFP but there is some vigorous discussion of this on the Rennlist 981 forum. FWIW I bought my 2013 used and it had a Soul Performance system. I replaced it with a factory unit which I like much better (bear in mind I am getting a bit older :/ and found the Soul system a bit loud).

Interesting. Do any of the folks in the “vigorous” discussion have any data to bring to the table?

I think the best value is a Carnewal exhaust mod by Cantrell Motorsports.
You send them your cat back exhaust, they mod and send it back to you. But - as others have mentioned, you may lose power - possibly at the low end. I replaced my stock 2009 Cayman S exhaust with a Carnewal modified Cayman R exhaust and it did feel like I lost some low end torque. Fixed the sound problem though. It sounded great. Full throttle was thing of beauty. It was a PDK car and back then they did not have the sound symposer - piped in sound that the 981 has.

Jim, I switched to a Boxster after 20 years of air-cooled 911 ownership, so can relate. I bought my Boxster used and it had a Soul Performance exhaust on it (original exhaust included in the sale). The Soul unit brought no performance gain and, as somebody said, added a real drone at certain RPMs, so I put the original back on. I like the quiet growl of the original and was able to sell the Soul.

SOUL/APR will tell you that a cat back system will not add power....it is for sound only and possibly a bit lighter in the ass. If you want a performance exhaust you will have to go with a non compliant (in some states) freer flowing cat or a cat delete/downpipe and then you are talking a non street system.
APR has done serious testing on the stock cat (718) and found it is so good going to a free flow adds nothing...so we are back again to noise. On a non turbo there can be gains from a system but that needs professional tuning and some dyno time and you will again be in that gray area of passing emissions. The stock systems really are very good....
