I have a 987.1 with a hardtop.
Does not rattle, no wind noise, water tight, makes the A/C and heater work better.
The rear window is larger than the soft top giving better visibility.
Also has a great window defogger.
The top is made out of aluminum and pretty light but bulky to put on.
The biggest downside to me is, you need to take the top off to gain access to the engine compartment. You need 2 people or a lift set up to remove it.
The 986 and 987 top are different. The 986's are easier to find.
I get a lot of comments about it all the time.
I like the way it is different from the other 987s.
I have only seen one other 987 hardtop but lots of 986s.
Prices are all over the place, try to find one that matches your color may be challenging.

A few years late to this thread but got a 987.1 (2005) with a hardtop (Arctic Silver) back in April. Dealt over an email / phone, flew down to FL that weekend, and drove back 1,300 mi to NY / NJ. As I contemplate putting it on for the colder months, anything I should do / be aware of? (For example, when folding the soft top for a more than a few month, I should put a towel on the soft top as I fold them down?) Like you said, I love two different looks - some people thought I had a cayman when I was driving up from FL.

I'll go in another direction, if you don't plan on track use I don't think it's necessary whatsoever. I DD my 986 all year round in some pretty heinous winter weather and the cabin is plenty warm and quiet enough as is. Never saw the value in the hard top. Plus because temps now fluctuate all the time warm days in winter happen often enough and having the option of top down luxury is a big plus. 2 cents, but yeah it does look cool.

If you have an ‘05 Boxster, it should have a glass window in the soft top.

The factory hard top rocks. Much quieter than the soft top. I've had my car for ~10 years. I've had my hard top on for the past 3 years now since my car sits outside most of the time. I highly recommend them.

It is a nice option to have, IMO.
