Temperature gauge not working?

2006 Boxster Base; 987-1

Just drove my car and after 1 mile I noticed that my temperature gauge was not slowly rising. I then got my red warning light and computer warning message that my coolant temperature was too hot.

Aside from finding the leak above my rear passenger wheel, is it normal for the gauge to not rise and work at all when the red warning light is illuminated? Do I have a bad temperature sensor which is keeping the gauge needle from moving?

Appreciate any info on the gauge.

Thank you.

The temp sensor or gauge are not going to cause the car to overheat, which you obviously did.

Thanks, JFP.
I wasn't concerned that the sensor or gauge caused the overheat...rather that the sensor or gauge might be collateral damage to the overheat. I just found it weird that the gauge didn't move higher when the warning light went on.
Best regards,
Dan

your cluster temperature gage is CAN Buss from the ECU. The temperature sensor is connected to the ECU. Use an OBDII scan tool and go to live data and see what is being reported to the ECU. You will know better what to do from there.
