Chain Tensioners Advice

1998 Boxster with 51,000 miles. I purchased the car with 5,000 miles and have changed oil using Mobile 1 0-40 yearly. Oil filter pleats are clean of any fragments. IMS has not been replaced.

Before I tear the car apart to replace the tensioners... is there any diagnoses that I can do to confirm that they are bad. The car does rattle for 3 seconds upon start up.

Thanks in advance.
Ken

You would usually be seeing some plastic particles in the pleats of the oil filter.

The start up rattle when cold is the hydraulic lifters. Probably happens only the first start of the day. After that, no rattle. If it was chain rattle, it would happen all the time.
