981 oil flow direction

I'm looking at lowering the oil level in a 981 Cayman because it's giving me the over fill message. Search results suggest the best way to remove oil is to remove the oil filter and pour out about a 1/2 quart. But when looking at how to do a oil change it looks like people are filling the oil filter canister with oil when installing a new filter!

Would an empty oil canister/filter starve the engine at start up?
