P0348 Camshaft Sensor 2 fault

I'm getting a P0348 Camshaft Sensor Bank 2 failure. I'm able to clear it, start the car, and drive. But the next time I start the car it returns. When I check the Camshaft Deviation, I get a steady 2.1719 on Bank 1 and a zero on Bank 2. Does this indicate a bad Camshaft Position sensor or a bad camshaft deviation solenoid. After writing this I feel like I have enough information to be dangerous!!!

It sounds like a bad sensor.

Thanks for the quick reply. I ordered the sensor and will report back.

So here is the latest on my issue. One of the wires to the sensor was broken, physically ripped in two places. I have no idea how that could happen. It was difficult to reach, but I did manage to crimp a jumper on it. That made the connection and I was able to clear the code. My concern now is the actual value readings I'm getting. Before, I was getting 2.1719 on Bank 1 and 0 on Bank 2. Now I'm getting 2.0000 on Bank 1 and -0.0313 on Bank 2. I can imagine that my crude jumper is messing up the resistance in the Bank 2 wire, but why would the Bannk1 reading change? Also, could this impact the position solenoid in a way that can damage the engine? BTW is a 2006 Boxster S.

Do a proper wire repair and check again. At least you'll have peace of mind that that is not the problem and that you can continue to diagnose if necessary.

My only comment is on the wire damage. Probably not “ripped”, but more likely mouse damaged. Inspect everything else you can see, I’d suggest.

Good advice.

Thanks for the replies. I have to take the trans out to replace the clutch. I think that will give me better access to repair the wire properly. I can only get one hand to it from the top. I wish they made the access hole larger! How does anyone work on these things?

CarGuyNeil 08-29-2024 11:58 AM

You have more access than most vehicles, top, front and bottom. Most vehicles only have top and bottom.

Bad sensor

djnolan 09-04-2024 02:41 PM

the wiring harness on the 987 is delicate. The wires are very thin and delicate. I had a broken MAF wire caused by me ripping it when I unplugged the sensor to clean it.

Te repair the wire, I had to undo the wire tie downs so it could be worked on. I soldered and shrink wrapped it.
