Rear Window will not fold properly
 

Hi,
I've got a 2001 BOxster S, and I cannot get ht erear window to fold correctly when the hood goes down.
It creates a v instead of folding across it's width, forcing you to get out of the car and push the Vdown to get the crease across the width.

Does anyone have any suggestions ?

Yeah, that's pretty much the way it is unfortunatley. You have to lower the top part way then get out and "chop" it to create a nice fold. Worth doing though as you will likely wear a hole otherwise.

Ahh, the infamous "Boxster Chop". We all live with it, sadly.

I thought it strange at first when the dealer showed me how to chop the top when I picked my car up. He said it was temporary until the top trained itself. Well I have one unruley top because it's been a year and it still hasn't learned. I wait 40 years to get my first new Porsche and the next year they come out with a glass window,great.

Has anyone tried getting it into the correct shape and gently heating then cooling the window to maybe induce the shape ?

I had a bmw Z£ previously which had did this periodically but you could train it out of it.

On mine, I only have to chop it maybe 60% of the time. Almost never on really hot (I live in Atlanta) days. I guess it softens up when warm? I guess it's just one of those 'personality quirks' we'll learn to live with.

I put a soft baby (infant) blanket on the widow before finishing up the lowering. This makes me get out of the car anyway. That way the plastic can't rub on itself.

IMO, its covered by warranty for 4 years. The owner's manual says nothing about chopping, just hope if its going to have a problem that its occurs before June 2005 (on my 2001)!

I think anyone who has ever owned a convertable (I've had 3 VW converts and one domestic) knows that they need a little tuck and fold help to settle in the best way. To simply sit in the car and put the top down w/o understanding what is going on is kind of a kluge thing to me. From what I read here and over at PP's Box Board, most get out of the car at md point in the lowering and make sure the window has one fold across at the middle.

Someone in another forum has suggested helping the crease by placing a cardboard tube along the crease on a warm day then letting the hood cool down, folded with the cardboard tube in place
