Wheels question...HELP
Just bought a set of rims and tires from another Boxster owner. Primary reason is because my original rims are pretty chewed up and I needed winter tires. This set had both.
The new set has the same measurements: 7 front, 8.5 rear. But I think the offset is different. I say that because when they were put on, I noticed that the rear tires did not look near as fat as they did before. Even more obvious was the fact that the rear wheels were no longer flush with the wheel well like the old set. Also the bolts were almost flush with the face of the rim whereas before on the old wheels, they were pretty far back into their holes. Does this mean I need "spacers" to bring the wheel further out? Is this generally considered safe and will it affect the handling of the car? Sorry for the dumb question but I thought that if they were 17 in rims they would have the same offset. Thanks in advance! D. Massey

You do not need spacers unless there are clearance issues. It can effect your handling due to the change in track width. I would drive it first and decide. Having ultimate handling with winter tires should not be an issue.

Fletcher,
I don't want ultimate winter handling but was rather thinking ahead to summer when I'll swap treads for some PZeros. Can you tell me why Porsche would make different offsets for the same car? In this case, the Boxster? Thanks, Hessian

ToolPants,
Tires are on the car now and I don't have a jack. I found out they came from a 2001 Boxster and mine is a 98. Could this be the difference? The old rear wheels and new rear wheels both say 8.5 / 50 on the rim. I did find the part number on the OLD wheels it is: GK Alsi7mgo.4 wa And under that is FR 5750N Does that help? Thanks! |

A wheel part number will start with 993 or 986 or 996. Saying it came from a 2001 does not help as there were many wheels available, then there is the base and the S, and Porsche did play around with the rear offset.
