Boxster Extra Keys
 

My car only came with one key. The dealer in my town wants $300.00 for a key with two remotes, programmed. I have seen Boxster blanks on E bay for $30.00. Has anyone had any experience with having E bay key blanks cut and programmed? The car shop who sold me the Boxster claims the key can be programmed by me with instructions included with the blank. I hope that's true but I must admit my bull**** detector was going off right after he told me that.

Hey, Tony I just went through the same drill.
I had a key with remote and a valet key only.
I tried all the stuff and ended up at Porsche. Leaving Porsche I was $307 lighter on the hip, but I did have the extra key.
The service manager told me there are three slots to program for keys, so he needed my original and my valet so he did not screw it up to where the valet key would not work. It could be programmed on slot 2 or slot 3.
So take your valet key with you when you go.

There may be a way around it, but I certainly did not find it.

Never seen 986/996 blanks on ebay, just other models.

Do not buy a remote off ebay unless it comes with the paper tag for that remote that has the 24 digit code for that remote. Otherwise it is worthless and cannot be programmed. There is no tag for the valet key. Also you must have the right year.

If you have the correct remote and the code then you need someone with a PST2/PIWIS to program it. Then you still need the key learning code from Atlanta. I know 2 independents that have the PST2 and Porsche will not give them codes. They have to get them through a dealer. You cannot do this yourself and your car must be with the PST2 to introduce a new key.

If you buy a used key you'll need the bar code that is usually attached to it when you buy it new... If not there is no way for Porsche to recognize the key.... If anyone tells you that all you need is the code that is located on the key then they are out to lunch!

To answer your question you can go to the dealer or a shop like...... hum..... well let me see......... Pelican Parts..???? We'll need a copy of your drivers lic and a current reg. for verification.... of course.

Thanks for the reply. My car has only been mine for one week, so it is on a temp registration, (NY State law). I won't have
a permanent registration for up to 90 days. Is a copy of that OK? Can I contact you to get a cost breakdown?

I am spending most of my Boxster cash in other areas so I'd like to keep the key cost down. Is it any cheaper to make a key without the remote modules which only starts and locks the vehicle? If so I think we can do business, I have my permanent registration it arrived today.

You'll only be able to open the doors and crank (not start) the car but forget about trying to drive the car without the "chip".....

If the money is tight then you can simply hold off on the spare key..... I've never used my back-up on the Porsche "yet".....

I have purchase the metal key part from a seller in the UK on EBAY. I sent him a picture of my key and it works flawlessly. I need a remote as well but is this really the case that I need the bar code from the used key for it to be prgrammed for my Boxster? That sucks and if true I guess Porsche will get their 1000% mark up from me for the extra remote. :(

This is an oldie. There are 4 slots for keys, not 3. Car came with 3. If you buy a car and it is missing a key and buy a replacement, then you are supposed to delete the missing key when you add the replacement. Because if you don't the missing key might show up one day, and your car is gone. This is why the dealer wants you to bring all the keys. To see which one is missing, and delete it. Or you can just put the replacement key in slot 4 if you do not think the missing key will ever show up.

I took the past 2 years off from Boxster stuff, but I doubt if key replacement things have changed. I guess they can now clone the chip so it will start, but not the remote. Looks like you still need the 24 digit code on the paper tag and a PST2/PIWIS for the remote.

The 01 Boxster has a fob/head without buttons, part #99653842301. IS it just a glove box key or will it start the car and work with the immobilizer? My local dealership believe it or not couldnt tell me.

There is a cheap solution: Take the transponder pill out of the key, and tape it to the inside of the ignition trim with electrical tape, and just make a copy of the key blade for $30 bucks via keysinthepost.com or a competitor (it's simple: you just upload them a pic of your current key blade).
