Tips for buying a Boxster 2000 or 2001
Hi,
I am going to buy a Boxster 2000 or 2001. I am nervous now because They are out of warranty the one I am looking at. They have 62000 miles on them. I keep hearing about engines blowing up. I heard this happened on the 97-99 models. Does this engine problem happen on the 2000 or 2001 model. Porsche says they fixed the problem 2000 onward. Is this true. What are some major problems on the 2000 or 2001 models. What are some of the common problems in those years. Also I spoke to a mechanic who works at Porsche dealer near me. His advise was to buy a car with more miles say like 50-70k because most of the problems will have been fixed under wrrantee or someone would have encountered the problems before these dates. It makes sense to me. What do you guys think. thanks |

I think the 2000 and later Boxsters have been pretty reliable. I've heard some people have problems with their "S" models, but I've not heard of anybody having major problems with their base models. There are a couple of good thread on here about buying a Boxster. Also check out Rennlist.com under their Boxster forum for more.
I would agree that buying a Boxster in the 50k mile range would mean that it's past most of it's problems, if it had any. Of course, there are some things that are wear related that might pop up if you go this route...clutch and top operation are two that come to mind. As always, have the cars inspected by a qualified mechanic for best peace of mind. What are you budget parameters? My brother has an '03 going up for sale for $32k. The advantages of the '03 are the glass rear window and slightly more powerful motors (228hp). You can see his car here: http://www.lumpocole.com/ Good luck!

If you get a 2001 or newer you can get a warranty from Warranty Direct (www.warrantydirect.com). No affiliation just a satisfied customer.

Ray,
Have you ever had to file a claim with Warranty Direct?? Did that work well?? Were they easy to work with and did they pay? I am considering one of their warranty's for my 2001. Thanks in advance for your reply. Mike navarro@flash.net

Hi Mike,
Yes I did or I should say my mechanic did, for the coolant bottle replacement. I didn't have to do anything, except give the [Warranty Direct] info to my mechanic and the rest was taken care of. No delays.
