Spend the $25... it will be well worth it in the end.

Save your money, Carfax is easily thwarted, I have this on good authority from excellent bodymen. It makes sense too if you think about it, any cash paid repairs will not show up, god only knows what other means of working around it exist. If you take your time, examine every seam, look at the panels in reflected light, look for even the tiniest of overspray and other tells, you will know on your own whether it's been hit, a good bodyman can tell you within minutes.

so if not carfax, is pre-buy inspection the answer?

This certainly cost more than carfax but I believe it's a much more comprehensive approach. The only thing I would caution is check if the PPI includes body panels, I don't think it does.

might be best to get all resources on the table. having more info than less.

-carfax / accident, odo, auction & emissions info
-ppi / engine, cosmetic, compression checks and more engine related info
-test drive / ...

i'm sure there are wiser that will add to this list to help us out. the used porsche seeker will no doubt profit
