temperature light flashing when cold

I have a 1997 Boxster ( 40k miles ) miles that has the temperature light flashing when the car is cold. The flashing stops when after it is warmed up. The owners manual says a fan is not started… is this normal? Any one have any ideas what is causing this? The owners manual says a fan is not started… is this normal?

Have you checked your coolant level?

I can't remember if it just stays lit or if it flashes, but when the coolant is low it does one of those things too.

Thanks Yea - Coolent level is good - The owners manual says a fan is not started - Is this intentional to warm it up, or does it mean it's broken?
