Air Bag warning light

Air bag warning light popped on today on my 99 Boxster. I feel as though I've seen this posted before. Will the seat belts cause this to occur? If so, will the seats have to be removed in order to replace? Dealer sounds like they are trying to jam me. Nearly $300 for parts alone and another $300 for install. Any help is appreciated as I ponder replacing myself.
Thanks!

I had it done to my '99, but it was under warranty, so I can't comment on the pricing. It's something in the buckle I think, so I'm not sure that can easily be replaced without removing the seat.

Where are you located? It might be worth looking for a skilled independant to work on your car. I had one who was certified up until the Boxster / 996 before going independant...makes a world of difference.

Hopefully somebody else will chime in about your buckle.

Good luck!

it's very common that the buckle fails. it has to do with the connectors we stock several of theswe buckles and do at least 6 a month

Thanks for the direction. It ended up just being a computer issue. The computer just needed to be reset. I replaced the alternator some time ago and disconnected the battery thus causing this problem to arise. Simple solution to a nagging and persistent problem. Go figure! Anyway, a fifth of Kettle One and I'm now driving "code free" . Pretty good deal.
