Crazy? No. Especially since you're "sane" enough to get a PPI. That should really tell you most of what you'll need to know.
Some '99 models are known for failing motors (I've had one), but general wisdom is they fail before 40k miles or so. A car with 80k miles should be well past that, indicating this motor should be good for some time. Otherwise buying a Boxster isn't that different than buying any other reasonably new car. Things wear, so just give it a thorough going over to see if you're ready to doll out some $$ for the PPI. It's a very smooth car, so if something is...er...rough, it's not right. The top should go up or down in about 13 seconds. Shifting should be smooth. Power delivery (while not what you'd call brutal by any means) should be fairly linear...with a little of that top end rush. Good luck!

Having a blast with my 1999!
From experience with other Porsches though, buy one with at least $4-5K in cash in the bank to keep it on the road. |

Yes, You're crazy. I bought a '99 Boxster 2 months ago, it got a clean bill of health by a very reputable independent shop, and 10 days after its last visit to the shop the intermediate shaft went. It's $11,000 to replace the motor. Save your money and get a better, newer car WITH A WARRANTY!!!! Good luck.

I just bought a '99 with 30k miles on it. PPI is very, very important. I looked at several cars that drove well but had issues only the PPI would bring to light. Ask the current owner for all the service records. Run a Carfax report. Caveat Emptor!
