Can't wait for the book, as I attempt to do most common things myself (used to working on 911's that don't have all the electronic stuff).

How about adding the "Pedro Sport Exhaust" modification? I have this on my car with Fabspeed bypass pipes and think it is big bang for the buck enjoyment.

"Battery diconnect/buddy" I assume refers to alternate power while disconnecting the battery? The radio code is an important issue and you've probably got it covered.

Under water cooling there should be a bit about replacing "water ventilation valve" (996 106 347 00) as they often fail and there is a supercede. And of course bleeding air out of the system (which you probably have).

Lastly, did you cover emergency front trunk opening? You've mentioned the procedure several times on the forums.

Interesting, I haven't seen that before...

I think that the welding involved might be a bit beyond 99% of the people in the book, but it might be worth a photo. Do you have more photos like the one above?

850dunstall 02-01-2009 06:15 PM

other topics to consider

1. i see you've listed radio headunit, but when you go from 986 to 987 things change in a big way, will that be covered?

2. PSM / PASM

3. ....still thinking.... :D

i suppose being just a recent porsche owner, i have been asking what seem rather stupid questions, i know my way around the VW scene pretty well and have found the Porsche owners manual to be less informative than what i was use to... i'll get over it and will soon be diving in with wrenchs in both hands..

Wayne 962 02-01-2009 11:24 PM

Sure, I'll cover the 987, I'm guessing you're specifically talking about MOST. That actually makes it somewhat easier in the long run, since it's now an industry standard...

That's a good list.
Here are a few more, some may already be included within your list.

1. Modify the OBC for outside temp and /or adding the 4th stock to control the "newly" programed OBC functions.

2. Removal of front bumper for radiator cleaning and horn replacement.

3. Reprogramming of the seat/mirror/window memory functions.

4. Cleaning of drains.

5. Programing DRLs

6. Wheel spacers

7. Solutions for lost/malfunctioning keys

8. Throttle body cleaning

9. Pros/cons of cold air intake, reusable oil type air cleaners, & de-snorkeling air intake

10. Removing the amber portion of the front headlights

11. Front and rear trunk access w/o power & location of emergency release cables

12. Common refueling problems/solutions, evap recovery valve and associated blown fuse, emergency gas door release cable location.

13. Explanation of the single left rear fog light. That always seems to trip people up.

I'm sure you'll get some other good ideas from the board here.

Can't wait for the book to come out.

Regards,
Aron

Thanks for your comments, Wayne. The muffler on my car was was actually modified by Oettle in Germany, but others, such as Pedro, have been modifying them locally. It is similar to the Porsche PSE, except the bypass pipes are passive and emit sound at all times. Because of the way the pipes are positioned, they tuck nicely up under the rear valance (pic) and are not noticable, unlike the PSE. Sound is wonderful, with no resonance since it is a factory muffler.

I'll post some more pics when I can find them...sorry for the poor pic attached; the car's tucked away for the winter and this is the best I have at the moment.

PlayersExpress 02-03-2009 10:18 AM

You say that the book is do to your publisher, what is the expected release date?

1. How to install a turbo setup on a boxster.. and or sc.

2. Randomly.. something rare and not really cost efficient... replacing the tiptronic with either a 5sp man, 6spd man, 6spd tip, or just updating the older 986 tip software where the new 987s you can override the automatic trans and manually shift but still be in automatic.

*GASP!* Wow that was a long ramble.

3. How to replace the stereo headunit withan aftermarket dvd.
3.5. How to install aftermarket speakers.
3.6 How to bypass/deinstall factory amp and install aftermarket amp.
3.7 How to install CD changer.

4. MOVING THE CLIMATE CONTROL UNIT!!!!! (Im still trying to figure this one out.)

5. Installing the 3rd radiator for the boxster.

6. I found a kit onlie which allows you to upgrade your leather seats to "heated" leather seats for those of us without that factory option, but they do not include installation instructions. (Might be a good idea, when driving on a cool night, just turn the seats onto low heat.. mmhmm.. )

7. How to deamber headlights, tail lights, and side markers.

8. Upgrading convt. top software in 986 so you can put the top down while you are driving.... (I would kill for this one)

I cant think of anything else right now.

Cheers,

Adam

ipod conection

I missed it if it was mentioned. I am never going to buy another CD player/changer. Ever!

I just want an ipod/mp3 player connection.

DCinVA 02-05-2009 12:16 PM

Excellent list. You have my current needs covered.

Cant wait. My proofreading offer is still good.

Arizona_928 02-05-2009 02:33 PM

MAF replacement. and maybe some common no start problems?

Balrog1967 02-13-2009 02:16 PM

possible additions

Looks great so far. I am very excited to get reading it. Some possible additions:
Center console repair
adding a 3rd radiator (must have)
Exhaust swap
anything with changing the cup holders out (iPod/MP3, and GPS holder?).
Adding wood/leather trim
Adding heated seats
That's all for now. I'm psyched. I can't wait to get going on my '01 986.

Intermittent wiper control

For those, as myself, who don't have the intermittent wiper control, could be useful to get the switch and relay and installing it. My two cents.

DCinVA 02-16-2009 03:43 AM

Just thought of something..... How to repair the vinyl when the coating (whatever it is) starts to bubble, and come off.

Brown911Brian 02-25-2009 04:32 PM

Yes!!!

Please, please, please DO publish this book!!! I have a 1997 Boxster that constantly needs something...

Here are my suggestions:

- Rear Main Seal repair

- That pesky problem with the driver's side door window dropping with the door handle, then going back up too soon (I have to watch it or it will hit the top when I close the door)

- Ignition switch problems (sometimes I can't get the key to turn at all)

- That stupid alarm thing under the driver's seat that goes bad and costs $1700 at the Porsche dealer.

- Variable valve timing problems (I hope it's just the sensor, this time..)

Brian

PS - Put me down for two copies when the book is published!

Wayne 962 02-26-2009 06:43 PM

Thanks Brian, I think most of that will be in the book!

JMatta 03-01-2009 10:11 AM

We applaud you for writing this book...you definately have a captive audience.

Can't wait to order my copy...

RNajarian 03-05-2009 09:32 PM

I cannot wait for the book. I Absolutely love 101 Projects for the 911 and Rebuilding and Modifying the Porsche 911 engine.

I think your readers may enjoy doing a couple of the modifications I've done to my car

1) Adding the Porsche Travel Pro GPS head unit

2) Adding the factory in dash cup holders

Over the years I've had to pay the dealer to do the following repairs. I think the readers would like to know how to

1) Change the serpetine belt

2) Replace the broken coolant overflow tank

3) Replace the fuel pump

4) Starter replacement

941MXVET 03-09-2009 09:21 AM

Sounds like a complete list to me!
At the moment I'm most interested in how to add the third radiator.

Thanks, we recieved your 101 Projects for your 911, and it's a VERY well done DIY book! Can't wait to get the Boxster book!!

Wayne 962 03-10-2009 11:15 PM

Yup, still working on it. Here's a photo from tonight, where we're putting together the header on the 996 motor that's going into the Boxster...

Brillo 03-11-2009 11:18 AM

Thanks for the update Wayne. I'm looking forward to the book coming out.

TX968 03-23-2009 08:00 PM

Wayne you may want to add Flywheel replacement along with clutch replacement and maybe add some notes for replaceing the DM Flywheel with a Lightweight version.

DCinVA 04-06-2009 05:58 AM

Just thought of something....

Please add a procedure to cure the squeeking front ball joint problem, without replacing the lower control arm.

PWilson45 04-16-2009 11:13 AM

Anxious to purchase the Boxster book. Already have the 101 projects for 911's and it is an asset.
I bought the Bruce Whittier "Owners Maintenance Manual" and have been less that satisfied.

I would like to see a description of a simple-easy Battery Tender installation. My batteries don't last more than two years in my little-used 986.

mikeatfhc 05-22-2009 09:39 AM

A big problem with the Boxster seems to be clunking at low speed in the rear - most of the time it seems to be the lower track arms - but in my case after replacing them the problem still persists - might have a section on the common suspension problems and fixes.

I've had all of the common 986 issues in my wife's 97 (but for the RMS issue...)
Bad Maf, Failed Coil, Terrible vacuum leaks, Coolant tank leak, broken Oil breater tube, broken dipstick tube, bad top mechanism - fixed via updated cables (must have), common clunking in rear end (still chasing this one), bad OAS, bad driver's airbag mount - which caused the horn to blow upon using brakes, Airbag light that won't go out (even after grounding update and new buckles), Constant CELs, rattles from the convertible top, now a broken Climate Control (on that note a guy on Ebay sells a replacement LCD kit to fix cracked LCDs, not my problem but you and your readers should know - saves a ton of cash), replacing dash bulbs...

Not that I don't love the car or anything.

seafeye 05-24-2009 05:42 AM

How about Headlight restoration?
Trailer Hitch installation. Or better yet, diy hitch construction.
Home alignment.

Well thats it for now.

gregwils 05-29-2009 09:06 AM

"I cannot wait for the book. I Absolutely love 101 Projects for the 911 and Rebuilding and Modifying the Porsche 911 engine."

Ditto. I have both books too and will buy this one even though I don't even own a Boxster.........yet.

daleflesburg 06-03-2009 11:32 AM

Maybe its because I am just old, and I need my 10 year old grandson to do this for me...

But.. I have an 05.. I cannot make the seat memory work. I cannot make the garage door opener work. I have a heck of a time with the displays from the computer. A good English language explanation of what to do and what all the goofie arrows mean might do it for me. I have no patience. I try something two or three times and say the hell with it..we are growing old here fooling with this silly bling bling crap. What we need to do is drive the thing.

I could not get the brake pads out of the car and had to have a pcar dealer mechanic show me how to separate the back of the pad from the metal piece separating it from the pistons. He was kind enough to show it at no charge... Also I have a set of Hawk pads I bought from you, and they are not drilled for the wear sensors. I do not need the wear sensors anyway, but is there a way to get rid of them other that to just wire tie them up out of the way? Seems a little rube goldberg..

Doug&Julie 06-03-2009 11:36 AM

How close are we? I just saw the book advertised as a Jan '10 release?!?

daleflesburg 06-03-2009 05:08 PM

Wayne, I know this is sacrilidge, or even worse, but how about how to remove the air bag equipt steering wheel and replace with one of the classic momo wheels or some such. I know they could only be for "off road" use, but I for one would like to make the change. Maybe even a quick change unit.

allen 06-16-2009 01:00 PM

Wayne,
Perhaps it's listed but have you included recommended replacement door and dash speakers as well as replacement amplifiers? Thanks, looking forward to the book.

Linksf 09-24-2009 07:37 PM

Hey. It might be too late to add this on, but you should add in "How to add an auxillary jack." I've been looking around for a while so that I can connect my iPod, and think I've figured it out.

1) Get an FM Modulator (I've noticed that Audiovox's brand has the best reviews)
2) Get 2 antenna adapters (one to convert the Boxster's antenna to a standard connector, and the second to convert it back to one that can plug into the boxster's radio)
3) Get a female jack mount (to mount on the dashboard somewhere)
4) Remove the radio (I need the keys for this, is there an alternative way I can remove it without the keys?)
5) Connect all the components you bought
6) Drill 2 holes (for the jack mount and modulator switch)
7) Reinstall everything

I want to ask though, are there any ideas for what battery wire I should tap into? I don't want to tap into the cigarette lighter because I plan on using that as an iPod charger. Thanks for any tips!!!

MBI seems to really really love cover shots with Porsches on lifts. Go figure.

Good luck with the book.

Is this a replacement? Do you cover the "updated" replacement as per Jake Raby and Flat6Innovations?

Is there anything about hardtop install? And on a similar note, is there any inclusion to the Zeintop hardtop? ..if not maybe you could add that in "Personal Touches"?

Can't wait for the book!

Edit: Never mind about the hardtop bit, I see it now...but still might like to add the Zeintop in there! :)

Whooo

I see six projects I've been considering . . .

Look forward to the release.

Where was this book a year ago when I paid to have the coolant tank replaced TWICE (in the same year?)
(Don't go to that shop anymore . . .)

Not sure which year you have, but if your stereo is a Cdr 220, then you can get an ipod input from Becker or SW Stereo.

I could use a step by step on two things: Both because I do not have a 10 year old to set them up for me. 1st. Setting up the remote garage door openers. 2nd. Makeing the memory work on my electric seats with key memory. The factory manuals were 1st written in Chinese, translanted to Japanese, then to German by an Italian, and then to English by someone from France. I just cannot make either of them work like they should or at all.

I have an 05 car.
