Horrid start-up noise

It gives me much joy to report my '97 2.5 has developed a lovely new start up noise. I've linked two youtube vids below - one of a start up with the new noise and one of a normal sounding start up taken a moment after the noisy start up.

986 Boxster horrid start up noise.wmv - YouTube (bad noise)
986 Boxster normal start up noise.wmv - YouTube (normal start up a few moments later)

The sound of the noisy start up is a little higher pitched in real life than the sound recording and seems an awful lot like a noisy chain running over guides - you can hear something catch or lift at the 5-6 second mark and then the noise completely disappears. The car then seems to run and sound completely normal.

My guess is that one of the hydraulic chain tensioners is taking a while to kick in. Having said that, I'm not sure it should ever sound like that, even before the oil pressure has had a chance to build.

Thoughts? Thanks.

I'm thinking thats exactly what you mentioned of the chain tensioner. Drop some engine oil and inspect for signs of metal. Had seen a broken chain tensioner guide before (cast aluminum cracked exactly in half) and the car still ran. Hopefully you don't have that dreadful situation.

I doubt the guide is clean broken - the noise disappears abruptly after exactly five seconds. If it is the tensioner, it's just taking a while to kick in.

My 996 does the same thing.

This startup rattle is considered normal according to many experts.

It really bothers me though.
