Is there a "common" power steering leak with 986's?

After having my '99 986 for a few months now I have had a blast fixing all the little "common" problems these cars seem to have... ABS light (fixed), spark plug tube leak (fixed), AOS lower boot torn (fixed) etc. This is a hobby car for me.

But now I've noticed that I needed to add power steering fuild to it. The PPI said there was a some PS fuild on one of the PS hoses running from the engine. Does anyone know if there is a common problem (seal vs. pump failure etc.) that I should suspect? I just haven't started taking things apart yet and thought I'd check with you guys first.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Joel

BTW - anyone thinking of having a PPI done... go to a Porsche expert... my guy wasn't and virtually everything said was incorrect or flat out wrong!

There is a "weak link" in the PS return line red plastic clip that holds the return line into the back of the pump. The clip only holds the line - there are two rubber O-rings that seal the line to the pump.

Also, one of the hoses is an overflow and drops fluid right down onto the top of the engine - maybe this is the "source" of your PPI - and this would not be a real problem - maybe just check the fluid level on a regular basis (?) ...

You may other issues, but the red plastic clip was ours.

Take care,
Roy T
