986/987 rebelion!

What gives?

Does anyone else be me notice that Boxsters' don't get any respect? I get the "Excellence" magazine and hardly find one picture or article about a Boxster or Cayman issue after issue! Even with the new Boxster Spyder Porsche now sells (which I now have a new all time favorite car!) it has never even been mentioned - C'mon! I was a former mid 80's 911 owner and now own a late 90's Boxster and feel it is a much better car. Anyway - I just have to vent...

I think there was one in the buying prices analysis section.

I guess us Boxster owners don't buy as many high priced toys for our cars as there aren't even as many ads for Boxster/Cayman items in the mag.

It has been pretty Boxsterless for the last 2 issues.

Somehow quarter million dollar restorations done by professionals to 356s don't interest me enough to justify 2 of them in the same issue. And how many 908/917 articles do you need.

I don't have a Boxster or a Cayman, but, I have to agree with you. You guys and your cars get no play. You talk to a lot of seasoned Porsche mechanics and they will say, the Boxster and or Cayman are very, very competant cars. Maybe to good. I am a 911 guy, but how dissapointing would it be to see the Boxster and Cayman suffer the same fate as the 914. Props to Porsche of Napleton for putting together the spec Cayman series. Maybe people will see their true potential on the track.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one...

What if we send a letter to the editor to ask for a little more stuff on the mid engine cars? Just a thought...

Pete Stout (editor of Excellence) is a regular on the Pelican 911 forum (Editor@Excellence) AND a Boxster owner. Send him an email or PM...I have in the past and he very good at listening and responding.

I never tire of 908/917 articles!

Pete is also a regular at 914World. He has two mid-engine cars. He is a true enthusiast. I'm sure he will listen. Regardless of Boxster content (or lack thereof), Excellence is a great Porsche mag.
I think it may be that our cars are too ordinary to be featured very often. Magazines in general want to feature the unusual, that is, rare, modified, expensive, original barn finds, etc. Our cars dont' fit those categories.

Isn't Pete also currently doing a Project Cayman series for Excellence much like the Boxster project they did a few years back, but more balls to the wall? At least that's my understanding of it. I wouldn't expect to see it in every issue, but it should be pretty consistent over the next year.

ps. We support your cars with LSD's and TBD's. They get love in our shop.

I started the other thread about future values. I bought the 2001 S and enjoying the car. Changed the oil, filter and spark plugs. Have a serpentine belt and air filter to change soon.

The two things I dislike about the car, after owning it for awhile, is the limit of 4 jacking points. Nowhere to use my truck size jackstands like the torsion bar ends on my 911.

The second thing is the engine intermediate shaft issue. I don't think the general build quality is up to the level of 911s. Great heat and AC, though.

911 & Porsche World magazine has regular Boxster info including tech info, although paying for the British pound/USA $ exchange rate means the mag is pricy here in US.

Lets be honest.. the real issues are 1) its not a 911 2) its not a factory race car

All entry level and NON aircooled 911's are slighted in the old school Pcar community - 914, 924/28/44/68 series cars enjoy the slight as well.

I loved my boxster. It was a great car.. but after years of aircooled indoctrination, it didn't feel like a real Porsche to me either. Then again, I now have a weak ass 944 and for some strange reason, really like it a lot!

As long as "you" like your car, who cares about what excellence does?

Probably just a dry spell in Excellence. Maybe what we need to do is encourage more folk to modify their Boxsters in interesting ways so they can be featured in Excellence (or other mags)? Or even sending Pete some other article ideas? Like testing a Boxster that has had motor work done by Flat6Innovations? (How good is a 2.9 motor?) Or maybe finding somebody who bought a Boxster w/o a working top and replaced it with a Zeintop for a 986 Cayman? Or maybe just an article on a Boxster with like 200k miles on it? I'm sure they're out there...

I think you hit the nail on the head Doug. Much of Excellence's content is around cars modified in one way or another, plus a few new model articles. As the DIY enthusiast crowd migrates to the Boxster, I am sure the mods will flow. Today, too many Boxsters are in the hands of people with no grease on them. The majority of people that can afford to have someone else perform all their mods are probably driving 911s.

I saw a 227k mile Boxster on Craigslist last night, but can't remember the city and can't find it again.

There's a '98 not far from here with 168k on it. It's been a tempting buy, if I had the extra cash for a rebuild (should it need it). Dang, with just a little more cash I could fulfill my own suggestion...buying this car and having flat6 rebuild it to a 2.9.

Alas, I'm on furlough this week and may not even have a company to go back to next week.
