Boxter Issues
 

We have an '84 5 speed 911 cab. we're looking to sell & replace it with a manual shift Boxter, say 1998 thru 2002. Do these cars have any particular issues to be on the look out for? Many thanks.

Late model 1998 and the 1999 MY showed failed engines due to a slipped sleeve.

IMS failure leads to the need for a new engine.

RMS leaks are fairly prevalent.

Don't let these issues scare you off. If you are going from an older Carrera to a Boxster you will find it much more forgiving to drive. Just do your homework on the pre-purchase inspection and make sure the car has been well maintained. Buy the newest year model you can afford as the engine problems referenced, while not completely gone, seem to be reduced in the newer models.

Chuck's post was just facts. No need to be scared off, newest affordable car is always good advice. Personally, I would inquire about RMS repairs with the PO and ask the local dealer if they can tell if VIN #xxx has been in for RMS. I would also invest in LN Engineering's IMS upgrade. It's $1k, but it would eliminate any related concerns. If you don't want to spend the money, at least remove the seal so the existing bearing gets more oil. I too would avoid anything prior to 2000 because of slipped sleeve problems.
