Can't decide: Boxster 2.7 or 944 s2 cabrio?

Hi Guys -

I know this isn't a technical matter but there's probably many of you on this forum who have an opinion on this.

I've not yet had the pleasure of a PCar but am now ready to take the plunge - but - i can't decide between a 00 model 2.7 Boxster or a 944s2 cabrio! I've driven a Boxster and really enjoyed it but haven't had the chance to take a S2 for a spin - they are rarer round these parts.

Here in Australia there is about $9K difference between them with the Boxster probably having covered fewer miles. I'm looking at 00 Boxsters for around AU$ 35K and 944S2 cabrios for around AU $26.

From my research i understand the differences in specs and equipment etc, but for those of you who have had both cars - what are your thoughts:

1) Are both equally fun to drive ?
2) How about maintenance costs - any major difference?
3) Engine/mech robustness? - there seem to be a fair few high mile 944's out there!
4) Fuel economy - is the s2 generally a little more economical in a mixed highway/city situation?
5) God forbid but which one would you prefer in an accident? - the 944's are supposedly very strong but there aren't any baggies vs the 4 in the 00 Boxster

Many thanks for your thoughts!

In the us, the '89 944S2 cab had a rear seat. 90-91 did not. Not sure about AU.

The boxster is likely the safer car. More modern design, crumple zones, multiple airbags and optional features like traction control and standard ABS.

Both are equally fun to drive, but the boxster can be driven quicker, more easily.
I think the Boxster is less $$ to maintain
Engines are engines.. Boxster issues are well documented, as are S2 engines. Keep up on the maintenance and keep them stock and they should be fine
My 2.7 boxster was rated, iirc, 20/26 mpg

I would lamost be certain that you'll get a much better condition S2 for mid to high $20k's, than a Boxster for early to mid $30k's. Boxster will also most likely be a tiptronic. Having said that, the Boxster should be the safer, better handling car. I also suspect that the S2 is also very, very unlikely to have serious engine troubles if well maintained, whereas an early Boxster engine could be a game of Russian roulette irrespective of the level maintenance received.
