boxsters at 100k miles - - any issues??

Hi all - -

I'm contemplating purchasing a used boxster and see lots of them with upwards of 100k miles, I'm considering 2000 MY+ but would certainly appreciate any insights into earlier models that have not experienced any major engine failures, later models with high miles, and what to expect in general.

Certainly I realize that there is not a ton of history with these 'newer' cars at higher miles - - but I'm wondering if there is anything I should be on the lookout for besides the normal wear and tear on higher mileage cars?

thanks in advance....

I bought my '97 with 105,000 miles on it in the fall of '07. It now has 136,000 on it with no major issues. I DID have to change the coolant reservoir because of a small crack (it was the original). And the oil fill hose because I damaged it changing the reservoir. It was already cracked though and it turned out it was the culprit causing O2 sensor faults on both left and right banks for some reason. It was logging faults every week or so that I had to clear but they stopped when the hose was renewed.

I have a 2000S with 97K and have replace the following:
Inner tie rod ends
Gas cap
Vacuum Reservoir
Change over valv
Drivers window lift mech
Water pump
Air Mass Sensors
Oil Vap Separator

Most of these things are common replacement items on the Boxster
Recommend a good PPI and purchase a car with verifiable service history.
Great cars and so much fun to drive.

There is a 2002 with 225k miles running daily in CA

A well maintained Boxster has a good chance of running for a long time. But if it does fail, $$$$. As is true with all limited production high performance cars, repair isn't cheap.

When purchasing a 100k boxster for approx. $10k, be prepared to spend another $10k in the next 5 years. These cars can be deceptively expensive to properly maintain because the initial cost of purchase is so low now. You can't look at it as a budget Porsche, because they don't exist.

coolant bottles, oil seperators, MAF sensors, O2 sensors, cab top issues, water pumps, wheel bearings, axle boots etc. are all things to have in mind on a boxster at or above 100k.

directionalyl correct, but i dont buy $10k over 5 more years

Actually, i find these pretty durable and cheap to maintain. Actually, i pretty much agree with the list presented. All of those will eventually fail. But it doesn't add to $10k. And if you avoid dealers, or, better yet, do some or all of the work yourself, i find the cost/mile pretty darn good.

The engines either fail catastrophically ( rare, but real) ro they seem to last forever.

The chassis and interior wears well.

You will undoubtedly do some combo or control arms, TREs, wheel bearings, electronic sensors, plastic parts ( AOSs, coolant reservoirs).

Tune ups and oil changes are very easy.

True, doing the work yourself cuts that $10k in half.
