Anyone got any questions on Project 7 - Replacing Spark Plugs / Coils for your 986 Boxster, 987 Boxster, Cayman, Carrera 996, or Carrera 997?

thread revival - just getting ready to do this job. I have an 03 S model, and my understanding is that you can't replace the tubes or O-rings on these, since the plastic was changed to metal, and the tubes do not come out without removing the engine and splitting the case. The write up suggests that the tubes should be replaced for cars up thru 04. Who is correct?

(edited to remove my statement that an 03 S has plastic tubes)...

If you have plastic tubes and need to remove them, I'd recommend picking up an Attwood screw-in drain plug from Walmart (currently costs just $3.56 !)

That tool works on the plastic tubes. My understanding is that for 03 and beyond, the tubes were changed to metal and can only be removed by splitting the case. I confirmed that the tubes in my engine are metal. So the real question is whether the O-rings get changed out, and if so, how is that done with the metal tubes that cannot be removed?

I had no luck with the boat plug. I was only able to get 1 tube out with that.
I have no idea how you can use a pair of needle nose pliers to get them out without breaking them.
For me I used a threaded pipe nipple available from about any home improvement store.
I think 3/4" size, check back in the other posts for a picture of what it looks like.

Steveng1993 - I agree - I couldn't figure out how to use a pair of needle nose pliers to get them out either (since I was changing them anyway, I tried!)

I found that wiping out the outer inch or so of the tube with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol (to remove any oil film) helped the boat plug grip better.
