Air Conditioner fried?

I ran my a/c today in 95+ degree heat and it ran cold for about 1/2 hour, but then seemed less cold to the point of not working at all.
I shut it off and opened the top, but when I drove into the garage, from the left side vent, I could smell a strong distinctly sweet electrical fire type of smell.
I didn't hear any unusual noise when the a/c stopped blowing cold.
I looked in the 101 Projects book, but only referenced recharging a/c's.
Any idea what it could be?
