Six Year Maintenance

When I purchased my '06 987 from the dealership I inquired about general maintenance and tires and such. The head mechanic was as helpful as I suppose he could be to a noob Porsche person.

He gave me the price on the yearly oil change ($110) and told me the only maintenance that that was coming up was the "six year tune up". He quoted me @ $1,100. This will be the Summer of 2012 when my warranty expires. I thought that price was a bit high for plugs and wires and such.

I plan on doing the tune up myself (with the help of a mechanic my wife knows and Wayne's project book). I guess my question is this: do I need to change anything out while we're in there? Like the AOS? I'd like to get everything done at once, not just the plugs and whatnot.

I plan on keeping this car for as long as it will run, so I want to keep it tip-top.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

OK maybe some one knows better, but I dont think there is such a thing. Look in you maintenance requirement page and check. If you have a tiptronic that is a pain but certainly doable. I did it and the differential At 60K, 90 is too long. Most things are by mileage with the exception of yearly oil changes(7,500 max not 15K, and brake fluid flush 2 too 3 years. BTW no wires to change. Each plug has its own coil pack on the plug. AOS as needed.

George, I not a pro but I do the regular maint. on my wife's 2002. For me I do the oil and oil filter change every 3-5 thousand miles. As a complete tune up 1-Oil and oil filter 2-air filter 3- cabin filter 4- Plugs 5- Belt 6- Brake fluid. Also check all fluids, brake pads, hoses. I also use a shop vac. to get the debri you will find by the two front radiators (leaves, pebbles, etc.) Check CV boots for cracks. Enjoy!

+1 on turbo's advice with the wires, they are really just coils no need to replace at this time but be prepared, when you change the plugs you will need to remove each coil and the plugs are in pretty deep. Best way is to remove your rear wheels for a better view.

Hey, thanks for the input! I'm no mechanic, but I'm pretty handy. My wife and I are teachers and she's in good with the auto-mechanic trades teacher. The two times I let her drive the car to school, he let her park the car in the bay away from the high school rabble. He loves the car. So he'll help me do the maintenance. Plus I have access to the garage during the summer.

I appreciate everyone's input, the last car I worked on myself was a 72 Cutlass. And that was over 20 years ago! I intend to do as much to the car myself (with any help I can get) to save some money.

George, I agree with Bklyn...I would add one thing...if you're gonna keep this car, get a durametric...it's the best $300 you'll ever spend...you'll need it to reset your maintenance reminder as well a reading codes, over revs and host of other stuff.
Use it once and it'll pay for itself.

Thanks, I think I shall invest in one!
