Fuel Pump replacement - Boxster
I walked out to the garage the other morning and my faithful 2001 Boxster (140,000+ miles) wouldn't start. The engine turned over but it wouldn't even pop. There was no smell of gasoline after cranking several times over the course of an hour and I suspected the fuel pump had failed.
After checking the two relays and replacing one which I couldn't check and only cost $20, I have concluded the fuel pump ought to be replaced. Does anyone have any ideas on how to verify the fuel pump is actually the problem? It's now about to get expensive, not to mention sticking an arm down into an almost full tank of gasoline to retrieve/install the fuel pump. Any advice would be welcome... |

Okay, firstly you can wire 12V directly to the pump by jumping the relay on the relay board. Pull out the fuel pump relay and then connect pins 30 and 87 together. Turn on the ignition, and this will provide 12V directly to the pump. If this doesn't work, then you need to head down to the local auto parts store and buy a large gas can, a small carburetor pump, and some fuel hose. Remove the top of the tank and then use the small pump to empty the tank of fuel (you can pump it directly into the inlet of one of your other cars).
I have an article coming out on this next month. If you send me an email, I will email it to you in advance... wayne@pelicanparts.com -Wayne

FWIW:
If you do need to replace the pump, Porsche has some special tools you may be interested in: Extra long fuel resistant gloves. They go up past your elbows and do not deteriorate in fuel. I do not have the part numbers, as I am home- but I can check on Monday. |
