Just bought a new Boxter and am confronted with a disturbing phenomenon. The car, when hot, smells like burning oil. And yet, there is no oil on my garage floor, none visible on the underside of the motor and there is no perceptible drop in the level of the oil.
Has anyone out there experienced this? Am I smelling some coating on the motor or something else or should I be concerned. Thanks, pts |

It is Cosmoline - the protectant used to protect the engine block. It wears off after a few thousand miles, I am told. Mine has > 2K miles so far, and it stil has the "New Boxster Smell". Enjoy it!

True, the block is coated out of the factory (oil-colored substance on the block).
Has this smell gone away just yet? -Wayne

NOT COSMOLINE !!
Turns out it was leaking cam cover gaskets. Replaced under warranty of course. No drips because they hit the exhaust. If it smells like oil...it probably is.
