2001 Boxter S question.
Would a 2001 Boxter S have the same engine casting concerns as early non-S Boxster?

No - only a very few of the pre-2000 cars had casting issues, and I have not heard of one in several years - they seemed to become apparent pretty quickly.
In any case, the post-2000 cars did not have the issue.
