Boxster Battery Choice
Since I have a dead battery in my boxster, I will need to do a replacement.
The dead battery is Motomaster Eliminator Automotive Battery, I think i might want to change to another brand... since this batter dies too soon even though i run the car once a week. any ideas? Will OEM batteries last longer than aftermarket ones? thx ![]() |

Hmm, to me all batteries are basically the same. For my 962, I tried to get one of those new fangled Lithium-Ion batteries from Porsche that are an option on the GT3. But they weren't available, so I settled for a BOSCH branded battery. I would guess that BOSCH, Die Hard (Sears), or the Costco batteries would be pretty good. BOSCH would probably look as correct as you can get without having a Genuine Porsche battery in there. You indeed might want to check with the dealer to see how much their batteries are - I heard once that they were reasonable. I have also installed Interstate into my Porsches - they tend to look "correct" as well.
I would normally recommend buying from Pelican, but we can't ship full lead acid batteries (only the gel Optimas, which are a good choice too). -Wayne

Also, I would love to buy parts from Pelican, but it is not allowed to ship liquid or acid stuff from U.S. to Canada currently. I orded the leather conditioner a month ago, and I was told that.
with the books, and the OEM parts, I think i am gonna save a lot of money by doing the DIYs. |

I like it! PLUS: dealers don't only charge expensive labors, they also damage my another vehicle once. they close the hood too fast and strong, and the two windshield fluid pump was loose and came out, lol. that happened on my vw vehicle. I don't know if Porsche dealers do that, but anyway, dealers are stealers. Glad I can also order VW parts from pelican. ![]() --- Germany vehicle fan |

Back to the question. Check out the battery threads on other forums too. There was a long one on RennTech IIRC.
My Moll finally died, and when the car wakes up in the spring it's getting an Everready from Walmart (flame suit on). The price is definitely right and it's made by Johnson Controls, one of the few manufacturers. The local stealership just wanted way too much for basically the same thing. I toyed with the idea of the sealed Optima, but didn't want to fart around with the transition base required, or the longer cable. BTW, if your batteries are dying too soon, you might have another issue going on. |

there maybe a chance that there is another issue going on, but since this is the first one dying too soon, and it's in winter storage time without battery maintainer, i guess it's not too abnormal... ![]() going to buy a booster tomorrow ![]() |

Nothing special about the battery a Porsche uses. You can buy by convenience, size, position of +/- posts, Amp-Hours, warranty length and details. A list of those known to work on my web page for the US is 20 batteries long.
I'll confess to using an Optima but just to see what that was all about. Easy install but I did buy the kit and I did need the longer cable. So it probably cost me $100 more in total than just going down to the local battery store and having them look up the one for my car and put it in would have cost. Do note that TIP transmission cars use a different battery than stick ... bigger Amps ... though the stick could use the TIP battery. Specs in your User's Manual. |

Don't waste your money on the factory "Moll" branded battery...I'm on my second one (model year '02) and it's not holding a proper charge, even though my car is on a maintainer when not being driven. The car is in winter hibernation at the moment, but I already know I will replace the battery come spring. I've used Optima Red Top's in my 911(s) with great long lasting results...very seriously considering going this route in the Box.

If you want a battery that is an exact OE replacement in size, appearance and power I recommend batteries made in US by East Penn. Their brand is Deka but other retailers often store brand them. I got mine at Carquest. The group 48 European OE is correct 70 amp hour for 5 speeds and the 94R is 80 amp hour for tiptronics. The 94 R I bought appears identical to the OE Moll I removed from my '04. Carquest sells the 48 for $112 and the 94R for $152. I almost purchased the 48 but the counter guy offered the 94 for $130. Sold! (I checked the dealer and they wanted $234 for the OE battery).

Odyssey now has a direct replacement for the group 45 battery. It is a very high end AGM battery and will be my next replacement. As soon as I can get my now 7 year old NAPP AGM to die. Draw back is it is pricey.

We just put a new Bosch battery in the 996 - looks almost as correct as the Porsche factory one.

Hidden behind the shroud I don't care for correct. I care about leakage probability, recovery from complete drain, weight, longevity, crank-ability. On my other cars, I buy at the convenient low priced store the mid-priced that fits. The Boxster gets better stuff. Certainly not required..just because I want to.
If I'm buying a Boxster...which will probably never be a collector car in this battery's lifetime...am I more likely to be impressed by a Moll or a Optima? I figure the latter for the next 5 years. Now in 30 years when most of our cars are crushed to make tin cans it might be different. I won't be alive to care. |
