Boxster S Hydraulics Tappets noisy

Hi All, I'm a new user to this great site,

Boxster S query, 2002 Car

I have a 'tappety' noise coming from the car though, It has been stood largely since August 2010, following an accident in it ( I bought it damaged to repair and use it).

The car has 38000m with a full Porsche service record to date. Oil was changed in Sept 2009 , (Mobil 1) The car was crashed in Aug 2010 just prior to next service being due.

I'm uncertain as to the cause of it, but was told the noise is likely to be valve lifters having drained and needing to be re-pressurised, and will they do this by sitting idling, or does the car need to be driven to pressure up again.

any help or opinion appreciated, obviously hoping its not an IMS rattle
Steve

Was the front end involved? See my thread about "no start."

Lifter clatter is a lot of noise but not all that loud. It's a rattle alright, but not like a ticking. I've had it after the car sat for awhile and when I used 0w-40 oil.

Noise takes a new twist

Yes, Front wing - Driver side.. took out wing, both Rads, fan rotor etc..

Looked underneath running car today, just prior to its visit to the paintshop.. Water Pump spewing water out, coming out from under the bottom pulley
..
may have found the source of the rattle.. wont know for sure until i change it.. Waynes tech article to the rescue again..

incidentally, car is recommended to use 0W-40 Mobil 1..any better suggestions

Yes, use 5w-40 oil, preferably a full synthetic. I just switched to Motul, but there are others.

I know the injectors are quite loud on this car maybe that's what you are hearing.

I would change the oil & filter before you start it again. I like Castrol Syntec 5w-40

I use Mobil 1 10W-40 High Mileage. No need for 0W or 5W unless its freezing on a regular basis and the high mileage formulation has the full offering of wear protection.
