New to Boxster
Hello,
Have a question for you guys. I was reading an old post about IMS bearings and I saw where it was said someone had one of these make a rattling noise at start up. Was this the only time it was making noise? My boss just got a 97 with about 40,000 miles on it, and I will be the one who has to fix everything. This car seems to run fine but it makes a weird rattling noise at start up only. It almost sounds like loose heat shields on an exhaust, kinda high and tinny sounding and only at startup. Any possibility this is IMS? I would appreciate any info and will probably be asking more as this is the first Boxster I have been around. Altec |

Check Wayne's Tech article: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Boxster_Tech/14-ENGINE-Intermediate_Shaft_Bearing/14-ENGINE-Intermediate_Shaft_Bearing.htm he talks about the noises. Have someone start the car while you listen outside and see if you can locate where the sound is coming from...mine has a slight rattle from the exhaust until is warms up a little.

There are many noises that can come from the Boxster engine on start up. Exhaust rattles are one of them, but they tend to continue when the engine is started. Another is chain tensioners - these tend to go away. The IMS noises that I've heard are loud at startup, and then they are followed by additional weird noises later on. The engine in the article with the completely disintegrated bearing idled pretty well, although it did have the "death rattle" on startup.
