I bought one..
![]() This is my "new to me" 2003 base model, 5 speed, PSM and Bose sound system. What a beautiful driving automobile. I wanted to say thanks for all the info I have gathered on this board over the last few months before I pulled the trigger on one. Two quick questions: I have seen some conflicting info, including the owners manual, about whether or not a 2003 needs a radio code. Anybody confirm this? Also wanted to know if anyone knows which relay controls the Bose amp. After I had been driving a few hours I lost all sound from the stereo. After I stopped for an extended time, it worked again. I'm thinking thermal issue with amp or relay. I plan on checking the cooling fan on the amp too. Thanks, Brad. |

Not sure if the 2003 is different. But here is the link to a 2000 diagram. I don't see a relay for the amp. Probably self fused. The protection circuit in amps get weak and shut down because of it then work again. when they cool down, sometimes. And congrats on your purchase! Nice ride.
Save the link. you may need it later. Randy 2000 Boxster Relay Chart

There is a query that is sent from the DME over the MOST bus to see if that radio is the one programmed into the DME. There is no user enterable radio code like the non-MOST systems.

Thanks Randy, I was just assuming that there was a relay, maybe not. I'll get a manual ordered shortly.

I just double checked and according to the "lost code faq" no cdr-23 radios use a code. So I'm convinced. This is going to sound smart alecky, but don't take it that way. It was actually your site that was making me wonder about the 2003 radio code. If you look at the section on radio codes it says; "...radio if he doesn't have the code. It was used on '97 thru '03 Boxsters. Later Boxsters don't require the code and use different radios." Your site is very informative and well done, you should take it as a compliment that I was putting so much stock in one sentence from it! Brad |

I can't recall exactly, but I've heard somewhere that the radio code is programmed into the cluster, not the DME. I think changing the cluster causes the radio to freak out if you don't update the cluster with the PST-2? Not 100% sure though...

The essence of my posting on the location of the radio "coding" on '03-'04 models was from the Renntech FAQ on lost radio codes (I'd have posted his exact language but that isn't courteous). The statement on my web page is just to reassure the person removing a battery that he doesn't have to worry about re-entering a radio code as the earlier model years did.

I was reading it as radio codes are not needed 2004 and later. I am just nervous about unhooking my battery for the first time and getting a surprise from my radio. |

Brad, my 2002 does require a code but it is listed in its manual. How I avoid resetting it every time I disconnect the battery is by using a small codes keeper device sold at most auto stores. Its a simple 9 volt battery attached to a adapter that plugs into your cigarette lighter, it works well. PS nice ride, enjoy it!
