WHERE to get a switched 12vdc source in a 987
 

I'm installing a FM modulator in my 05 987, I have the CDR24 w/bose system.
I've made the antenna connection and the ground connection and the constant 12vdc connection ....but cannot figure out where to get connected to 12vdc that is switched from the ignition. Yes the modulator requires 2 sources of 12vdc.

Took a good close look at the fuse box but could not determine which circuit to connect to and what would be the best way to make the connection.

And I work as an electrician for a utility company.....so I know a little bit

anybody have any idea, I'm soon headed home to try something :D

It's tough because the electrical diagrams are not easily obtainable for the later cars - at least they haven't been for me. That said, the ignition switch has switched power on it, so one or more of the leads coming off of that would be switched. I would take a wild guess that the colors used on the 986 are the same as on the 987 (they typically use the same colors across many different cars), so if you have a 986 diagram, you can do a best guess from there.

With the later-style MOST systems on the 987, I'm not sure if the radio receives a power-on signal from the switch, or whether it gets a signal from the fiber optics - probably from the fiber. However, there may be a switched - out signal from the factory unit that would switch on/off an external amp. You could theoretically run a relay off a switched source like this if nothing else worked.

you can get it from the phone prep connector. do a google search and youll find it

Why not just tap off the switched wire that goes to the back of the radio? The modulator probably does not draw enough current from the fuse to make a difference to it.

As I eluded to previously, I'm not sure if the newer-style fiber optic radios still use switched power or not. I think they might get their on/off signal from the MOST bus. I'm not sure though...

Not sure either Wayne. But my guess is like on newer home stereos, (a stereo is stereo) The fiber opticts is just for the audio signal to the amp. It should still have a hard wired power wire to the stereo. Just like a home stereo has a plug for the wall.
But not sure. Just a thought.

there is 12 volt battery at the harness, just no accessory/switched

So you can play your stereo without the key in the ignition and in the on position?

Thanks for the help guys, the connection to the back of the head unit reads 12vdc regardless of the position of the switch so that wont work. I aint crazy about cuttin into wires, or doin any shade tree wiring on this car.
I have removed the FM modulator and will use one of those crappy Fm transmitters for the short term or untill I figure something else out.

The post about phone prep.......I am clue less about what that is but I'm still listening if you want to explain more about it.

There is no need to cut into the wires. If you go to a local car audio store and ask for T connectors they should have them. They simply slip over and existing wire and have a loop to put an additional wire in them. Then you just snap it closed.

yes. If you just unlock the doors, the dash illuminates and the CD can be ejected.

So, the radio always gets 12v, but I believe is using the MOST system as the 'trigger'.

The phone prep connector is to the left and near the floor beneath the shifter. If I remember later, I'll try and post a good write-up of where to get this.

OK....the install of my Dice FM modulator is now a success thanks to all who took time to respond to my question.
The PDF of the pin out of the CDR24 was the key to getting a 12vdc switched signal for the Fm modulator, Thanks Wayne for that info.
I used the wire for the electric antenna for my switched source (I do not have an electric antenna) so that worked out great.

The Dice FM modulator also shows the names of the songs on my CDR24

Also just for the record ....the correct antenna adapters for the CDR24 in a 05 987 were Metra brand and the part numbers are 40-eu10 and 40-eu20 or as a set they are packaged as 40-eu30.

Also this link PCM 2.1 Install (CDR-24 Radio Removal) - Articles to an post on Planet 9 was absoulty essential for me being able to remove the head unit.

WHAT IN THE WORLD WOULD US DIY GUYS DO WITH OUT THE INTERNET FORUMS TO TEACH US HOW TO WORK ON OUR TOYS.......:D

Hi, i'm also looking for a switched live, but on a 2003 986 Boxster, with a CDR23 fitted. I'm not keen on having to run a wire from the fuse box. Thanks, Andrew.
