Guys I need your opinion. Today i was driving my 1980 911sc, and I decided to stop by a buddy of mines dealership. Now even though we are good friends, he is still a car dealer. Today he was looking over my car and offered to trade me on a 2003 porsche boxster.
http://www.carsforsale.com/used_cars_for_sale/2003_Porsche_Boxster_132171460 I took it out for a drive and it for me, the pros are A/C, more power, handling was great, awesome Bose stereo, and many other creature comforts as well as a crash bar so I can do track days this summer. and other obvious pluses because it's like 20+ years newer. Also being that my 911 is a convertible conversion, I guess you could say that it's worth more. Cons would be, ITS NOT A 911, and besides the conversion, my 911 has a cosmetically better looking exterior. Other tidbits are I need to fix both my window regulators and my odometer stopped working about 1500 miles ago stuck at 164k. The boxster has 112k currently but runs solid with no leaks. Is this a fair trade? Would you do it>? |

Mate, this comes down to personal choice. You have the raw unrefined power and sheer class and driveability of a 911 or, the refined comfort, speed and handling of a Boxster.
Our Boxster is my first porsche and I love it. However, I would love to drive a 911 and feel the difference. Neither is better than the other, they are both great cars in their own right. The choice is yours. Enjoy the car. |

I think you need to ask specific questions, otherwise you will just get a bunch of opinions, when really only one counts...

Is it just me, or does the asking price for that Boxster seem low?

Seems low to me, but then I paid 15k for my 2000, with 78k on the clock, but then it is pristine vehicle.
Then it may be a great buy, hard to tell thousands of miles away, and only photo's to go by. IMHO, I think I would have an PPI done on it by a trusted source, and go from there. See if I could get a look at the service records and a Carfax before I committed.

This is a pretty average deal on the Boxster.
KBB puts the price at $12,300 (Good condition), so this is about the right asking price for a base 2003 with 100K miles when being sold by a dealer. Most likely the dealer will take an offer that is $500 less than asking which will put it right at the blue book price.

Interesting comment: Prices are coming down...
I agree and think the Boxster is a sleeper buy on the used car market. Once the Aftermarket gets the IMS issue nailed, these cars will probably increase in value. Through the years, I've seen early 911's take it's hits and now look! Crazy prices for early 911's... E and T's too. (To think I had a few gems some years ago, bought, driven hard and resold for under $3K!) As for the Boxster, they won't rot out and in time will have enough followers to at least maintain value. Lot's to pick from under $15K and some as low as $7K can be had. Dealers tend to hold in the spring time for the sports market. Volume dealers will average a mark-up $2000 - 2500 from the Blackbook average column wholesale and play from there. Some dealers will roll the iron for $1,500 and be happy enough with that as profit. Whatever you decide, have fun! |
