Removing the oil sump today(update with pictures)

I will be removing the sump today and would like to get all the parts I need before doing so.
My question's are:
Would I need a new gasket for the sump when I remove it?
Can I reuse the old gasket? (if there even is one)
Can i use RTV? or Gasket maker?

thanks for looking guys

There is no gasket - it's "gasket maker" that is available, I'm sure, from our fine host.

Well I removed the oil sump and found no bits of metal..
There were area's of clay like spots that looked strange but besides that it was pretty clean.
I can sleep at night now.
I've included pictures of my findings.

Please take a look and lmk if you guys see anything out of the ordinary.
Thanks again guys

Looks OK to me - as you say, so long as there are no metal shavings, you're probably OK. Not sure what the hard spots may be, other than maybe the oil was not changed in as timely a manner as it could have been.

The little brown bits look like it's from chain tensioner guides. It's normal to see tiny wear bits. If you see bigger chunks you are probably due for new guides pronto. If a guide fails and the timing chain slips... blammo!

Ahhhh!!! lolz

Thanks for the advice.
I'm glad I didn't find anything in there.
My chain tensioner has been making a little rattle at cold start lately.

That seems to be the case with everyone's cars. I have four of these (two 996s and two Boxsters), and when I leave them to sit for a little while, they all seem to do that.

I did our 98 986 last summer and it was an easy job just messy....just make sure everything is CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN I let ours drip, drain for 24 hours then wiped all of the metal flange surfaces with rubbing alcohol to make sure it was spotless. I also went to Home delpot and bought 4 bolts and cut the heads off to make guide bolts since I did want to the sump cover to make contact unevenly when I reattached it. Apply yor gasket material and work promptly and press evenly. Hand sung the bolts and then remove your 'guide' bolts. Make sure you TORQUE the bolts to the required spec NO TIGHTER as they will snap....shift from side to side....I let mine sit for another 12 hours before I refilled it with oil and then took it for a test drive....check for leaks or weeping bolts and you should be good to go.

Good Luck...
