Why you don't see many other Boxsters on the road

Another thread here got me to revisit the numbers I've gathered for Porsche sales.
Since I can't upload my spreadsheet for all models, I'll just give you the highlights.

Basically the Boxster is lowest selling Porsche model (34K from 03-10). The Cayenne is the big time sales lead (100K from 03-10).

Even the expensive Panamera sold 7741 cars in 10, putting it right behind the Cayenne (8343) and miles ahead of the Boxster (2177).

Boxster sales since 03:

03-6432
04-3728
05-8327
06-4850
07-3904
08-2982
09-1909
10-2177

So if you're ever wondering where all the Boxsters are when you're driving down the road, it's because there aren't that many of them to begin with.

I became interested in counting the one's I see on the road here when I bought mine on 12/24/2010. So far, the total is 8. I see that many Corvette's in one day. I was talking to a guy that that we use to share our office with his business, who had a Corvette. A Boxster pulled into the parking lot. I told him, I really like those cars. His reply. Ah, Those aren't real Porsche's.

I have absolutely no statical data to prove this, but. Porsche is a pretty small market segment to begin with. I doubt they sell as many boxsters as chevy sells there higher end corvettes. When you put all the other less expensive sports and performance cars on the road it seems easy to see how the boxsters is pretty rare. Of course when you first buy a car there are always more of what you just bought on the road. Maybe you have had it to long.

Hmmmmmmmm, Maybe I need to trade it in on one of those rare Miata's. Nah, Think I'll keep it and wait for the people that don't take care of them, to thin out the field.

Wow that's something I didn't know about Boxsters. Around here I see a couple a day.

In 1984 they made like 26,000 944s.

From November 2006:

Quote:
Porsche is celebrating the production of its 200,000th Boxster, which recently rolled off the production line at the outsourced Valmet Automotive plant in Uusikaupunki, Finland. The milestone reaching vehicle was a meteor grey metallic Boxster S that’s being delivered to a customer in the US and marks ten years of production for the popular roadster.

At the car’s launch back in 1996, Porsche had originally estimated an annual output of just 15,000 units. However, with the recently introduced Cayman hardtop, total sales for the 2005/06 fiscal year amounted to 27,906 cars.

We could go on about the reputation of the Boxster, but that overlooks the fact that this is one of the sweetest handling cars in the world. In its latest iteration, the Boxster S features a 3.4L flat-six with 295hp (217kW), up 15hp over the previous model. We hope that the increased production numbers doesn’t detract from the exclusiveness of owning a Porsche, a major problem the company faces with annual sales for all models reaching the 100,000 mark.

Yeah, from a guy driving a plastic pig...what would he know? I'd take my Box S over any Corvette, any day of the week.

Agreed, He was some JA real estate agent, (not that all real estate agents are, Let's just say, he was not a good representative) that didn't know his arse from a hole in the ground. He could barely drive that led sled. Much less handle a real sports car.

I drove 4 Corvettes before I took my first drive in a Boxster. Took me less than 2 miles to make my decision. I didn't care about the exclusivity of the P-car brand. I wanted a car that drove like the Boxster did. (I was actually negatively disposed to the Porsche brand having owned a 914 new and having helped maintain a 912. Both rust buckets of unreliability.)

Went to Raleigh Thursday, saw 3 Boxsters along the way. Zero 911s. 1 SUV. In my community of 3000 houses, there are 4 Boxsters. 2 Caymans. 2 older 911s. No 996/7s. 1500 pick-ups.

I owned a 86 944 from 1995 to 2000. That is what I was originally looking for. Couldn't find one here in ABQ. Found the Boxster I have and took it for Three days from the dealer. "SOLD". I've never driven a car that when you get to a 90 degree right turn. You can just take a handful of steering wheel at 30 MPH and yank it right and your off and running in a straight line. My only problem is with a 36" inseam. I need to do the GT3 mod.
Oh and Mike Just wanted to add. Thanks for all of your valuable research and information you have on the net. It's been a big help!!!! You deserve some Kudos

I see 10 Boxsters a day on my commute in the DC area. Lots of yuppies here. But it's worth the risk of being lumped into that category :-)

LMAO! That and for what ever reason. Being refered to as chick cars. Guess, I'm a yuppie chick. I've been called worse.

I live in a small town where pick up trucks are the predominant vehicle of choice and for a couple of years saw no other Porsches at all, now there's four Boxsters and a GT3. I would say a fourth of the attendees at out region events are Boxsters.

Hmmm....there have been over 225,000 Boxster/Cayman's sold since 1997. That's a lot of cars! And they are everywhere here in LA.

The Boxster figures I quoted are total USA sales.
Yes over 200K Boxsters have been manufactured since 1997, but those are worldwide production numbers.
So there aren't 200K Boxsters on the road in the USA until they build bridges to Europe.
Based on my national research of Boxsters for sale, I would have to say the that bulk of Boxsters in the USA are in the greater LA area.
Boxster still represents Porsche's smallest sales with the Cayenne way in the lead even considering it wasn't introduced until what? 2004?

I live just south of Nashville in a town of @ 100,000 people. I've only seen three on the road. Ever. I wasn't really looking for a Porsche--I just wanted a convertible that handled well. I looked at everything from Miatas to BMWs to Mustangs. Around here, Mustangs are primarily driven by women. You can't spit without hitting one. I've got nothing against Stangs, I've owned three, but I didn't want something that everyone else was driving. I looked at the BMW Z4, but I think they're ugly. That's just a matter of opinion though. Also, the reviews I read favored the Boxster. I could have bought a 911 circa 1999 to 2002, but I didn't want to pay for the insurance. I wanted something quick that handled well, not necessarily fast. Sounds strange, I know. Bottom line is, I could have afforded a Vette or a 911, but there was no point in it, really. I'm looking to get an old 911SC in a few years though. I love those old 911s! Must have the whale tail!

Everywhere I go, I get compliments on my car. It's insane! You know your car is cool when seven year old kids walk up to you and say "hey mister, that's a cool car!" Everyone wants a ride in it. And I oblige them when I can.

Indeed, I've seen the same too. You can also see it on this board. People who have an early 911 or some other type of Porsche are buying Boxsters on the cheap because they are good cars (Milt is one perfect example). The enthusiasts are showing up at the events. It's going to have a good, growing following in the future...
