Catalytic Converter Replacement
The check engine light on my 2003 Boxster S came on and the code identified a problem with one of the O2 sensors. A visual inspection revealed evidence of a catalytic converter that has gotten very hot so I am going to take it to the dealer. Does anyone know how long catalytic converters are covered under warranty? The car has 42K miles.

If the catalytic converter has gotten very hot, then chances are it's an ignition problem. Basically what happens is that the ignition coil or something related would fail, and then raw fuel gets passed through to the exhaust where it reaches the catalytic converter and then ignites there. This is very bad for the converter and usually destroys it. The car typically tries to tell you if this condition will happen by flashing the check engine lamp repeatedly. If anyone happens to see this flashing while driving, they should pull over immediately, as they might be cooking their very expensive catalytic converters.
Oh, to answer your question, I think emissions parts are warrantied for seven years, but not if there is a problem like this where the unit was damaged by outside issues. -Wayne

Thanks for the info and I'll post what I find after my trip to the dealer. BTW, I ordered and am waiting for my copy of your 101 Boxster projects book to be delivered. I am a new owner, first Porsche.
