going back to stock air filter

First off i wanted to say that this is a great site with a lot of information and great advice.
I have 2001S (bought in 2006) and finally started doing my own work after reading through everything here (has helped to remove the intimidation factor).
So after accessing the engine i discovered the air filter has been replaced by what appears to be an AFE cone filter. Since i have never seen the stock air box i am wondering what i would need to go back to the original air filter.
Thanks for any help.

Marty

So the previous owner did not give you the original air box? Thats not going to be cheap. Not a big deal just parts and a PITA. Get the parts diagram and check a salvage place first then order what you need. Good time to clean and or replace the MAF sensor if it is dirty.

Marty for what its worth you should go back to the original air box, I have experimented with cone filters, oil type and dry types and always seem to have a problem. They would either foul the MAF and set off the CEL or gum up the throttle housing and cause a rough idle. Went back and never had a problem.

I've used K&N filters for years, and currently have an EVOM CAI on my '99 Boxster, and have never had a MAF or CEL issue. The main reason these issues show up is from over oiling after cleaning. Most owners use way too much oil and don't allow the filter to sit for a day after oiling. If you use half as much as you think you need then let the filter sit for a day you shouldn't have any problems. EVOM has also come out with a "dry" cone filter that acts like an oiled filter. If you go back to the OEM be prepared for some work as the air box and sound chambers require you to loosen or remove the manifold on that side to squeeze it in then you have to access two screws on the bottom that typically require you to get the car up to get to them.

Thanks for all the feedback. I bought the car from a local exotic car dealer who had imported it from the US, and he had no paper work or anything. Live and learn. Obviously after reading through here and getting a couple of codes related the MAF i decided to tackle it myself and clean it(or replace if necessary). This is when i discovered the filter, and based on what i have read in regards to oiled filters it has started me thinking about getting back to a non oiled type.
Funny thing is when i bought it i took it to the Local Porsche shop and had them do a thorough going over. They never mentioned anything related to the air filter.

I've had the Evo Hi-Flo cone filter on my car for five or six years...have never had an MAF or CEL issue. As mentioned earlier, virtually all problems occur from over-oiling. I clean my filter, re-oil, then wrap in newspaper to remove any excess. There's absolutely no reason a dry element cone filter would cause a problem, if you don't want an oiled variety. The sound is every reason not to re-install the factory air box.

I was just thinking about that this afternoon. So there are cone filters that are a dry element that i could swap in place of the oiled?
