Don't tell anyone from the SCWDP that I'm here!
Any of you out there have a 2.5 L Boxster? Just wondering how the performance is. I see you can pick up a second hand one for high 20's now. That seems quite attractive. Just for grins, say I was looking to get a boxster for every day use, would you recommend I get a 2.5L or save up more $ and go for the bigger engine? |

I have a feeling that Boxster owners don't need to spend too much time under their cars. Most of us are getting out there and driving them.
I think the consensus would be to get as new of a boxster as you can afford. I have a 2000 Box with the 2.7 engine and I'm very happy with it. The first versions (97-99) had more problems but by 2000 most of the bugs had been worked out. 97-98 only had 2 year warranties whille 99 on has 4 years. Early version prices ($20,000-$30,000) do make them look very attractive. They are great cars to drive, to look at, and to fuss over (wash, clean, & polish). I'm still having fun after 2 years. I hope you find one. |

There was a cracked engine case problem on the early Boxsters that was a common warranty replacement (full engine swap).
Check to see if this was done. For this reason, there are a bunch of people nervous that are depressing the values of the early Boxsters. There was also an electrical problem with the roofs and windows closing / opening / getting stuck, etc... -Wayne

My understanding is that the problem with engine cases was not a crack, but more of a pinhole problem - casting flaws meaning oil would leak through seemingly solid metal. Was NOT a problem in '97, was a problem in '98.
The top problem was a microswitch, easy fix if you had the correct replacement part revision #. Also don't forget the airbag light problem, the seatbelt wiring would go goofy and need replacing. Again, you had to get the right replacement part revision #. There were a number of oil leak problems with '97s not related to engine cases. Bolts too long for their holes, oil breathers mounted horizontally instead of vertically, etc. -Boyo
