Son of a....!!!
Threw a CEL right when the weather is about to get nice:-/ So, which of the two diagnostic tools on Pelican is preferred? I was going to just get a Durametric because that's the one I've heard of, but when I saw the AutoEnginuity one, I figured I would get expert opinions. Car is a 2002 Box S. IMS/AOS already done within last 5000 miles. Car runs fine. I do have a start-up rattle, but not willing to pull the motor for chain tensioners at this point.
Thanks

Durametric. And the tensioners can be changed without pulling the engine………

For 90% of the problems, a simple code reader will do...Actron or the like...and a good listing of the Porsche codes and their meanings for your DME firmware revision.
The Durametric adds many Porsche things but not as many as the PST2 or PIWIS or AutoEnginuity. The last 2 are rental only at a price of a new engine per year and are targeted at repair shops. Prices are something like this: Actron $49-120 depending on model Durametric $290-1070 depending on model PST2 ~$1500 when you can find one |

I haven't been into an M96, but my understanding is that the plastic ramps are what wear out, right? I had the tensioners (the part that pushes on the ramps) out when I did the IMS. I don't really see what could wear on those though. When talking about tensioner failure on these cars, what part actually fails?

The tensioners tend to lose their internal seal (they operate on oil pressure) and developing sticking issues, reducing the amount of force they put on the chain paddles. There has also been an updated part released that includes a helper spring that keep more mechanical tension on the chains while the oil pressure builds up during a cold start, reducing noise.
![]() The chain ramps wear pads also tend wear out after miles, but they also show up in the drain oil as plastic bits.

Ok thanks. There's no real consensus on when to replace these is there? I had mine out for the IMS job, but honestly, I don't remember if it had the spring or not. I know the tensioners on my 964 have springs. Seems like a worthy upgrade though.

We replace them with the newer design when we do an IMS change out; they have to come out anyway, and one less problem to be concerned about.

Ordered the durametric from pelican. It's not here yet, but this morning as I was leaving the donut shop, I noticed the light was gone. I'm sure it will be back though.
