If it's a white puff on start., just briefly? Which I'm pretty sure it is. Yes. It's even in the owners manual, that it may do that. Now if a plume of smoke, that lasts for awhile. Like a rock concert. Then that may be the AOS, (Air Oil Separator). Or as we called it in the old days. PCV. (Pollution control valve) (-;
If I may make a suggestion though. Get a PPI done on it.
Good luck with it. You'll love driving it. Trust me.

How long does it take to go away, once started? It's normal to have a little smoke for a couple of minutes as the engine warms. As long as it's not a large plume of smoke when started. It's probably fine. Even if it's the AOS it's no biggy. Pain to replace. But not a death siganal. Get a PPI done if you really like the car!

Re; "in the old days. PCV. (Pollution control valve)"

PCV originally meant; Positive Crankcase Ventilation.

Otherwise Randy is right on.

puf on start

My 2002 puffs a small amount of blue smoke when I start but only if I had the car out on the highway the previous trip out. No smoke if I had just taken around the town trips.

Porsche Crest Smoking Boxster

Great advice on the smoking Boxster , everything i have read says it is normal for small short burst of smoke on start up. I had a horrifying experience when my boxster literally smoked like a blown engine, thought i was toast. after reading this blog changed out the AOS (air oil separator) and fixed the problem. Tricky installation but very doable. Thanks guys
