Help me with some "manual" information... !
 

Hi, guys....

My very first question here. I'm a newbie, but not a newbie. I just bought my 4th-ever Porsche - a pristine '08 Boxster S that I simply couldn't pass up. I've been out of Porsches for a few years, and boy does it feel good to be back!

In my past are a 912, 356B, a 924 (sorry), and a 911SC that I brought back from Germany in the mid-80s. That was my daily driver for nearly 10 years. This Boxster amazes me with the little that needs to be done to it! I don't even know where the dang engine is! (kidding)

Anyway, I'm used to synchronizing carbs (a long time ago), changing rotors and distributor caps, and adjusting valves. I'm not used to not having to do that stuff. I'm trying to learn about this car and I've heard you guys mention a "101" manual or some such.....

Is there some kind of a service manual or book, or something out there that I haven't found? If someone can point me to it, I'd love to buy it!

Thanks a lot. By the way.... I perused other forums before joining this one, and this one just seems "right". I like the attitude I feel coming from this one, and I like the mutual feeling of respect toward other members. I'm an old Porsche driver and some of the other forums seem like they're made up of guys who know nothing about the car they're sitting in... but they like the color or the shield on the front.

I hope I can pass along some of what I may have picked up over the years... although it probably fits in the 356 or 911 forum better than this one right now!

Sorry there are none for the 987 that I am aware of, only for the 986, except for Mitchell or All Data, you can purchase an on line access to their data, I think it's $20 for one year.

Ack... thanks for the info. Gone are the days of the Clymer or Chilton manuals I guess.....

Almost none of the OEM's print anything these days, way too expensive and always out of date, it is all electronic and by subscription. Porsche has not published any service related data since 2003-2004 model year, but back in the day, the 13 volume set of manuals for a 986 was well over $2,000, plus another $1,300 for the OBD II manual.

note in many cases the differences between the 986 and 987 are small.

It also seems to me that there isn't a lot to worry about (timing, points, carbs, valve adjustments etc). Mostly gas and oil.. some filters.. shouldn't need to much to take care of that stuff imho.

The 101 book is for the 986, correct? For those guys that have it, would it be a worthwhile addition for a 987 owner, for the general knowledge that overlaps into the 987 models?
