Radio/Stereo Advice Wanted

OK, strange as it may seem, I kinda like the stock stereo (Option Code M322) CR220 with the ever-cool DSP (M680) & the 6-disk changer in the front trunk (M692). The only bad thing is that the right-hand knob that changes the station is whacked; twist it 'up' & it might go up...it might go down; twist it 'down' and it will go down...or up...it seems to choose randomly!
I started thinking about replacing the radio but have a few questions:
1. Will the DSP function with a different head-unit?
2. Are there many options that would work as a control for the 6-disk changer?
3. I think I'd like to go to a double-DIN unit with navigation; unfortunately the two DIN openings I have are not together. Could either the heating controls or the DSP be moved to get two openings together?

Does anybody know if the leads on the heat/AC control will reach to the lower section, so I can move it to right above the DSP controls?

yes, you can move the climate controls to the bottom pretty easily

Cool, I'll work on that next.
Does anyone know if the DSP will work with an after-market head unit?
Is the DSP a line-level unit that sits between the head-unit & the amps? Or does the DSP feed the speakers directly? I'm guessing the former...
