When I bought my car last May the first work I undertook to do on the car was a service. I renewed the gearbox oil in the service. The oil I bought for the gearbox was from my local PARTCO (I'm in the UK) its just down the road 7 or 8 miles away.
The guy I most always see checked his book for what oil I needed, he gave me FUCHS Titan 75W 90, Semi-synthetic, API GL4/GL5. The oil works great, the gears are easy to engage just as they were when I bought the car. The car has had 7months of driving on this oil, when I change it again I will buy the same stuff.

notchy
I bought my first porsche in December and like You the transmission fluid was the first thing I changed. I am the proud owner of a 2001 Boxster 5 speed with 56000 miles. I love to drive and have driven plenty of vehicles off road and on and get a real thrill with this car. Anyhow my thing is before I changed the fluid low cold r p m shifting from first to second was notchy and higher cold rpm shifting was fine. Now with Porsche first fill fluid low cold r p m shifting is good and cold high r p m shifting is notchy. I would prefer to keep the r p m down until she warms up but cold traffic driving makes me shift from first to third sometimes because of the notchy shifting at higher r p m, 2500 to 3000 into second gear. Would changing the fluid to another type help or is this just a normal thing to expect from this car? Also what about a heating pad against the transmission on the plate under the transmission running off the battery controlled from a switch in the cabin. I plug my battery in with a porsche charger in the lighter plug whenever at home? Would the battery handle this set up when at work? How big of a pad as far as watts? Just throwing things around, any input would be nice. Thanks

Hi Flybird
Did you use the oil recomended by Porsche to refill your box? If the box is notchy now at high RPM cold going in to second, I am no expert but there is an upgrade for second gear that you can do with the box in the car although your car has'nt done a lot of miles. I seem to remember it has to do with the indents. Sometimes the clutch is the problem if not fully disengaging. Perhaps if someone else chimes in on this they may be more helpfull. As for the heater pad, sounds a novel idea.

Shifting pressure for notchy second
Hey thanks for the reply and info. I spent much of the morning going through threads at every forum I could bring up containing information on first to second shifting when cold and the notchy grind that goes with it. Wow, this is very common with the Porsche. One person I believe from the UK suggested when you are ready to shift into the next gear apply a small amount of pressure to the shifter in the dirrection it will be going to before you make the shift. BINGO works for me. It was about 20 degrees when I first started out to try this. Even when transmission was warmed up I was in the habit of doing this but with less pressure. Hope this helps others with the same problem.

Would a short throw shifter aggravate this problem or make it less noticeable?

flybird,
How is your engine mount? A worn mount can effect shifting notchiness. I just changed the mount in my 2000S as I noticed a slight roughness at idle although my tach was rock solid steady. I did have a little notchiness in shifting but o noticable resonance around 2500-3000 rpm. Upon removal, it was easy to see that the old mount was torn. Car feels great now. |

notchy
Not sure what shape the motor mount is in. At idle everything seems smooth enough. I only experienced the notchy feel when the car was first started, after she warmed up the shifting is buttery smooth. I took the advise of putting lite pressure on the shifter just before shifting the increasing it as I shift and that did it . No more notchy shifting! Even after the car warms up I use this method and the shifting seems spot on . Hope this helps others
