To sell tires or take to the dump??

I have a pair of Pirelli P Zero 205/50 ZR17's that came off my Boxter. They have a date code of 4505 but look to be in great condition. This car only has 60k on the odometer so I'm sure the mileage is pretty low. Question is, should I sell a set of tires with a date code of 2005? They still have just shy of 5mm of tread left and show no cracks what so ever.

Thanks!

Jeff

I wouldn't if the car is just a daily or part time diver. (no track time) As long as the side walls aren't dry rotted and there are no blisters. I drove on a set of Michelins on my F150 truck for 9 years after I bought it. Untill they became dry rotted. Then I switched them out. I know it's a Porsche on one hand. But it is also just a car on the other.

Two schools of thought here: the manufacturer says not to use them after 5 years but they have a vested interest in selling tires versus the stories of people saying they've run tires for decades, until the tread is gone. I think I'm somewhere in between: they're not going to last forever yet they don't 'go bad' the first day over 5 years.
Personally, a Porsche & a truck are two different things, at least the way I drive them! When I throw my car into a tight hairpin, I don't want to be worrying if the sidewall will hold....there are 200 other things that might let go but I want to be able to trust my tires!

So go burn up some of that tread before replacing them !!! Then you won't feel so bad.

Nah, I decided I wanted to switch to Michelin's when the Pirelli's on the rear ran out of tread. It just didn't seem right to run two different brands of tires on my toy so I popped for the Michelin's all at once and kept the Pirelli's from the front. If anyone's interested in these tires I'm in the Charlotte, NC area.

I wouldn't want the liability of selling tires beyond the date the manufacturer had suggested.

They are pass their due date and they may last another 7 years or suffer from a catastrophic failure tomorrow.

Since you live in the "I'll sue" capital of the world... I would cut them with a chainsaw before putting them in the garbage.

Sue capital of the world......that's for sure!!!

I had a set of Michelin LTX tires on my truck go for no reason. I was driving down a really nice black top road and didn't run over anything when all of a sudden the tire blows. As you can see from the picture the damage isn't exactly where you would expect a tire to typically go. With the amount of miles I put on my truck I go well past the date code before they run out of tread. That's what has me thinking I may just make a trip to the dump. Still, if the rears hadn't run out of tread I would have had no problem continuing to run them as long as the tread was good and no cracking had occurred.

Manufacturers' suggested "use by" dates are based on a worst case scenario: storing the tires in the sun/elements. I wouldn't hesitate to use well-stored new-old-stock tires up to 7 years of age. The tires start cracking -- usually on the sidewalls -- after 10 years or so. In many cases, these tires are still on cars in use. I've seen 20 year old tires on cars not used a lot. I've seen fresh tires fail in a few thousand miles. Inspect the tires in person. Remember, tire shops and tire manufacturers have a vested interest in selling you new tires.

For the OP: your tires are probably worth $100 or so to someone.

I would put them on my local freecycle group, myself. I've never had very good luck selling used tires, but giving them away seems to go very nicely. The Freecycle Network
