iPod adapter for CDR23

I have been searching forums and do not see any easy solutions for a hardwired iPod adapter with the CDR23 head unit. Am I better off buying an aftermarket unit? Does this require replacing the wiring harness?
What is the best solution?

Hi there. There are several good approaches you can take. You can hard-wire the iPod into the AUX input of the stereo and then play it through the speakers. Or, you can use an iPod RF adapter, and play it through your radio. Option number two is what I chose for my Boxster because it shows the song and artist playing on the radio face, and it also charges the iPhone / iPod while you're listening.

I cover both of these updates and installations right here in this tech article: Pelican Technical Article: Changing Your Stereo Head Unit / Installing Ipod Integration - 986 Boxster (1997-04) - 987 Boxster (2005-08)

Thanks Wayne.
I was tired of the sound quality with the cigarette lighter adapter. Is there a plug available that fits the AUX input that can be adapted for the iPod plug? I have also seen adapters that fit between the head unit and antenna; however, non seem to be available for the CDR23. I think I will contack Becker direct.

I Googled Becker electronics and get a lot of private companies. Does anyone know Becker's web address? Thanks.

Actually, Becker North America's website is right here: index

Not exactly professional looking, but I verified that's the factory website where I've bought cables and connectors before.

I did this Becker cable install.

I detailed it on a few other forums.

Works flawlessly. Car remains stock.

A much better solution then the FM transmitter.

Putting your faith in an aftermarket radio installation is a gamble too. You never know if they messed with yoru wiring/grounding.

The nice thing about the integrated FM transmitter is that you get the artist / song displayed on the radio *and* the unit charges while it's plugged in. Using just the AUX connection - I guess you could hook up a separate plug to the cigarette lighter, but then you have two wires going to your iPod / iPhone, and it's not too elegant a solution at that point.

I ended up going with the Scosche ipod adapter. Unfortunately, I could not remove the head unit with the removal tools I bought from Crutchfield (Wayne, why don't you carry this stuff?) so I had the Geek Squad install for $49. They did a nice job. Total investement about $230.

Glenn,

Do you know/remember which Scosche ipod adapter you used? I have been searching for one of these and can't seem to find any that support the CDR23 radio. I am told the VW Audi Scosche adapter may work. Is this what you used? Any help/guidance appreciated.

Hi Joe,
No, I do not remember; however, I purchassed the unit from Crutchfield. Their sales staff was very knowledgeable. I ended up having the unit installed at Best Buy for $100 as I could not get the head unit removed. It works flawlessly.
