Looking to buy Cayman S

I've been looking for a while now and I might have found one. I would like to know what to look for in a used one other than the standard car stuff.

I'm looking at an 06 S

Thanks in advance,

Bob

You might want to check mike focke's page, Boxster and Cayman pre-purchase stuff is pretty similar. But really, "other than standard car stuff", I'm not sure there's a lot to look for on these cars. Have a PPI done and check for RMS leaks, I guess. But other than the dreaded IMS bearing "issue" (for which there is no "check"), these cars are pretty well sorted.

I can report mine had a radio issue when my brother owned it (replaced under warranty) and I've replaced a battery (which required a "reboot" to the ECU by the dealer). Otherwise it's been a terrific car.

Edit: I'm about to cross 40k miles, FWIW.

Why not try and find an 09. Pretty sure it will have the new engine style, No IMS to worry about. Could be wrong. But if sold my 01S Boxster that would be the limit line on model year or major feature I would wait for. There is most likely a Caymen club/special from with a boat full of info if not here. I think they look exceptional in white or yellow.

Sorry, all pretty standard stuff really:

Has the car been serviced regularly? Oil chg every 5k?
Has the car been flogged? read out ECU faults and over revs.
Does it leak oil? Live in the rust belt?
Undercarriage damage or unusual tire wear indicating abuse?
Any shiny bits found in the oil filter upon inspection?
Foul odor or water stains in the cabin?

These are on my short list of things to check out. Good luck with your search.

I just researched this and didn't come up wth much - other than the IMS/RMS worries (which seem fairly uncommon), there don't seem to be any typical weak points to the 987. I bought a Boxster S today from an authorized Porsche dealer, but as said above, I just did the usual checks for a used car and sprang for a warranty.

Thanks guys, I'm looking at a low mileage one now, but the only thing that stands out in the pictures is the front spoiler, it looks slightly off color (Silver) to the body paint. Now it may be a photo thing, a sun thing, or it was replaced or repainted. Anyone in Houston want to look at a Cayman for me

I would get a PPI at a Porsche dealership so I would insist they check for accidents.

I've seen some cars that have painted accents like that.

..or like this: 2007 Cayman S 21,500 mi $41,500

Note the air intakes are silver as well. I think it can be a neat look...not sure if I'd grow tired of it or not.

I thought that trim was standard on the S models - there are two Caymans with it for sale in Chicago right now.

I have an 22k miles 07 CaymanS since new. After 5 years I still love the car and it makes me feel like I am 17 again. No issues, all good (knock on wood). Early CaymanS (MY 06) had contrasting color front spoilers. Also, some owners like to paint their spoilers and fog light holder in different colors. for more info specific for Caymans, try the Cayman forum at planet9.net . Lots of info there. Good luck.

It was an option I believe. I'm looking to put the RUF front end on mine (when I get it)

Speaking of options - is there a sticker on the 986s/987s that list the option codes on the vehicle, like in the olden days?
