Yes, you have to remove the entire center console and there are screws under the ashtray insert and other fun places. Give it an hour to hour and 1/2 and you're done. Minimal tools.

here you go sir

as promised.
you can find the DIY for removing the center consul here:

Pelican Technical Article: Installing a Boxster Short Shift Kit (SSK) and Replacing Boxster Shift Bushings - 986 / 987

just finished installing the short shift (great mod by the way) and just by chance i have another E-Brake assembly in my garage.
so i toke some pics for you.

in my opinion you do not need to remove the E-Brake assembly. just break the pin that holds the old switch (you don't need it any way), remove it and replace the new one.

this is the part you will need:
Pelican Parts - Product Information: 996-613-112-01-M100

let us know how it worked for you. once you remove the consul it should be a piece of cake.

here is the large pics.

this is the top view when the e brake is located in the center between the seats.

this is the switch at close up. you will need to break the clip and disconnect the wires

this is another view of the switch on the other E Brake i have outside the car

this is the view from inside the E Brake assembly when you can see the clip.

yes, you are right

I didn’t pay attention to that since my console was apart any way.
I guess if you remove the side panel you will gain accesses to the switch. Doesn’t look like its going to be too hard to remove it.

Short answer, "yes, but..."

Yes, you *can* skip taking the center console out and work solely from that access panel. However, it's *very* tight in there. I was able to use a big flat head screwdriver and pry out the old switch, in effect breaking the mounting post off, and pulled it out with a set of needlenose. However, trying to get the right angle to get the new plastic piece in and NOT bend the new post going in was a pain. I eventually just took the center console out. It was much easier to do it this way, and with my SSK coming in today, I left the console apart so I can install it when it gets here.
